Set in West Hollywood in the late 70s, this overheated drama centers on a funky drag performer (Alan Cumming), the closeted attorney who loves him (Garret Dillahunt), and the abandoned Asian teenager with Down syndrome whom they decide to adopt as their own child (Isaac Leyva). Like Patrick Wang's superb In the Family (2011), another story about gay adoption rights, this develops into a legal drama, but the other movie was slow, sober, and genuine whereas this one is brisk, flamboyant, and ultimately rather fake. Cumming and Dillahunt make for a spectacularly awkward couple, but the real problem may be the time period, which engenders a strong and not particularly interesting sense of victimhood. Travis Fine directed; with Chris Mulkey and Frances Fisher.

Fri-Sun 1/18-1/20, 2:30 and 9:45 PM; Mon-Tue 1/21-1/22, 9:45 PM; and Thu 1/24, 9:45 PM.
