2012 | 77 minutes | Rated PG-13
Fashion journalist Diana Vreeland began her career at Harper's but cemented her status as a harbinger of postwar counterculture as editor of Vogue in the 1960s. This documentary profile by Lisa Immordino Vreeland, Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt, and Frederic Tcheng squeezes an impressive amount of information into a relatively brief running time, yet it's blandly straightforward in its use of talking heads and archival footage, ultimately betraying the brazen, avant-garde sensibility Vreeland brought to Vogue. The best take on Vreeland is still William Klein's Who Are You, Polly Magoo? (1966), a satirical jab at the fashion industry that criticizes Vreeland's extravagant personality even as it mythologizes her influence.
