Rated PG-13 · 109 minutes · 2013
Joss Whedon transplants the Shakespeare comedy to contemporary Los Angeles—specifically, an extended party at his own home in Hollywood—while preserving most of the original dialogue. The language still feels contemporary, however, since the cast, comprised mainly of TV veterans, delivers it in the glib, easily digestible manner of a network sitcom. This fast and loose 2012 independent production is enjoyable as a home movie, but not much more. The players don't seem especially invested in the material (Fran Kranz, playing the repeatedly deceived Claudio, may be the blandest of the bunch), so the narrative complications register only as devices. At the same time, everyone's clearly enjoying the game of making Shakespeare sound Californian.

Sun 12/4, 3 PM, and Tue 12/6, 6 PM.
