Hello and Goodbye

Through 6/6: Thu-Sat 8 PM, Sun 2 PM

In this 1965 two-hander by South African playwright Athol Fugard, an embittered whore named Hester returns to the shack where she grew up and where her emotionally stunted brother, Johnny, still lives, ostensibly taking care of their disabled father. Hester has an idea that the old man has hidden money somewhere in the house; the siblings' search for it becomes an excavation of the family’s past. As befits a play that unfolds in the middle of the night, Luda Lopatina Solomon's staging for Bluebird Arts communicates a hushed urgency as well as a hint of menace. Aaron Lawson's Johnny remains a little vague throughout, but as the tightly wound Hester, Jaimelyn Gray gives a thrilling performance combining swagger, self-pity, sorrow, and raw desperation. —Zac Thompson $22, $18 students and seniors
