Young Fathers, Mas Ysa

Sun., May 10, 8 p.m.

In a recent profile of Scottish hip-hop trio Young Fathers for British weekly magazine New Statesman writer Kate Mossman said the band’s 2014 debut, Dead, is thought of as “critically acclaimed but too tough to inflict on a mainstream audience.” The description seems apt given that Young Fathers’ nonblueprint is antithetical to broad appeal. Still, their mishmash of gospel-like vocals, groaning and humming synths, and kitchen-sink instrumentation is executed with the precision of an astute pop group—they shot for the stars on Dead and wound up taking home the Mercury Prize, the UK’s prestigious best-album award. The threesome continue threading eclectic sounds together into moments of unexpected euphoria on White Men Are Black Men Too (Anticon), which is thornier and more elaborate than its predecessor. Musically, the album can also be a tad busy, and feel a stretch too long because of it. Young Fathers trigger excitement like they’re playing with a jack-in-the-box; “Shame” in particular pops with energy every time its sweet vocal melodies surface. —Leor Galil $15
