Reasons to Be Happy

Through 10/12: Thu-Fri 8 PM, Sat 5 and 8 PM, Sun 7 PM

Neil LaBute revisits the characters from his 2009 play Reasons to Be Pretty in this combative yet compassionate and, for LaBute, uncharacteristically cruelty-free sequel. Greg, Steph, Carly, and Kent are older than they were the last time we saw them, but not much wiser and just as prone to romantic confusion—especially Greg, who can't decide whether he wants to be with Steph (his ex) or Carly (Kent's ex). LaBute manages to make the now-or-never desperation in their various stabs at happiness seem both comic and poignant. But the results are much less subtle in Darrell W. Cox's keyed-up staging for Profiles Theatre. Disregarding the script's changes in tempo and tone, the cast race through the evening in a sweaty panic. —Zac Thompson $35-$40
