Tashi Dorji, Michael Vallera

Thu., April 2, 10 p.m.

Like a Bill Orcutt or a Ben Chasny, the Six Organs of Admittance guitarist with whom he has collaborated, Asheville-based experimental guitarist Tashi Dorji has never been hesitant about shooting elaborate lines of guitar down like clay pigeons and reveling in the shards of sound bursting and scattering in the air. On his newest album, Appa (Bathetic), notes that fall from Dorji’s acoustic guitar land less in the form of a cohesive composition and more like what a thousand jigsaw puzzles dumped into a cement mixer might resemble once dried into a single mass. But unlike some of Dorji’s more abrasive spells of improvisational playing on previous recordings—in which he occasionally sounds like he’s strangling and gnashing melodies out of his guitar—Appa feels slightly more finessed and serene (picture a slow-motion clip of a cheetah running down and mauling a gazelle). The melodies on tracks from the album’s front half, like the opener “Death Flowers” and “Realms on High,” are often contained within swirling, fast-picked riffs that loop and loop till they fall off of a cliff—but it’s the headier compositions with their staggering, drunken riffs and algebraic timekeeping that somehow keep the album grounded. —Kevin Warwick
