Fifth Star Awards

Wed 9/17, 7 PM

The first-ever Fifth Star Awards are tonight. As Reader culture reporter Deanna Isaacs has noted, the awards are a new undertaking by the city's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. And though it's unclear how the winners were selected, sculptor Richard Hunt, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago founder Lou Conte, and composer Ramsey Lewis will be among those honored. Not a bad cast. Lucky for us, the ceremony is free and open to the public.

No Light No Lycra

"Dress comfortably, travel lightly, and bring water." And be sober. Seriously. No Lights No Lycra is a weekly, lights-off dance party that was spearheaded in Melbourne, Australia, in 2009 and has since gone international, establishing scenes in Berlin, Glasgow, Brooklyn, and Vancouver, among others. The mission is to provide a "friendly, nonthreatening, drug- and alcohol-free environment" for people to gather and "experience liberated physical movement." $5
