“MAYAN PROCESSION”
Paintings depicting the distinctive textiles of the Mayan people of the Guatemalan Highlands will be on display at the Renaissance Court Gallery in the Chicago Cultural Center at 78 E. Washington St., Chicago, Ill., from March 26 through May 2, 2010. There will be an opening reception on Friday, March 26 from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. Included will be a sale of Mayan handicrafts.

Each village takes pride in the weaving of their traditional costume and each costume has a special meaning to those who wear it. The paintings are arranged in a sequence to depict the beginning, middle and end of a funeral procession. Included with the paintings are photos of daily life in Mayan villages and samples of their beautiful hand-woven daily and ceremonial dress.

In the epilogue to Brian Friel's celebrated 1990 memory play, set in 1930s Ireland, the narrator confesses that, in looking back, "atmosphere is more real than incident." Seanachai Theatre Company seems to have taken that nugget too much to heart. The play's thin plot--five spinster sisters bicker and dance as their elder brother returns from a religious mission in Africa--struggles to break the surface of heavy-handed atmosphere. With the notable exception of Don Bender as the culturally dislocated Father Jack, the cast play signifiers rather than characters, turning the fuzzy-edged warmth of a good memory into the dim anonymity of a stranger's family photo album. --Keith Griffith $22-$26
