Men Should Weep

Through 8/10: Thu-Sat 7:30 PM, Sun 3 PM

Ena Lamont Stewart's 1947 drama centers on a large, working-class family living in Glasgow's East End during the Great Depression. Lord knows they have their problems, including unemployment, infidelity, TB, and substandard housing (vividly realized here in Courtney O'Neill's detailed set). But things rarely get dour or preachy in the play, thanks to Lamont Stewart's fierce compassion for her characters and a sense of humor that shines through the grime. Required by the script to speak in a sometimes impenetrable Scottish dialect, the uniformly excellent cast of Robin Witt's revival for Griffin Theatre Company nevertheless convey resilience and decency amid all the suffering. It's an ensemble piece, but the heart of the show is Lori Myers's stirring, emotionally raw performance as the overworked matriarch. —Zac Thompson $35, $30 for students and seniors
