Endgame

Through 10/4: Thu-Sat 8 PM

Director Aaron Snook reimagines Samuel Beckett's dystopian vaudeville as an absurdist hospice. Clov, servile clown, invites the audience into a cluttered salon where he prepares Hamm, helpless petty tyrant, for death. It's an apt framework for the play, which is as much about cosmic angst as the daily indignities of old age. And it allows a graceful, buffoonish Vincent Lonergan as Hamm to claim the stage for his own, giving a poignant resonance to his incessant efforts to keep himself in the middle of everything—even when his everything is almost nothing. Lonergan's meticulous, mesmerizing performance carries the night, while Bries Vannon as Clov struggles to get beneath his character's surface. Snook turns Hamm's decrepit parents into Clov's puppets, a choice more puzzling than illuminating. —Justin Hayford $20, $15 for students
