Laughter on the 23rd Floor

Through 3/1: Wed-Sat 8 PM, Sun 3 PM

First Folio's production of Neil Simon's autobiographical comedy, based on his time writing for Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows, is full of old-school zingers that feel surprisingly fresh and sharp (save for a dated Gene Kelly reference) and demonstrates how Caesar's writers influenced the history of comedy. The cast is outstanding, particularly Joe Foust as Val, the Russian head writer whose pronunciation can get the best of him; Kevin McKillip as hypochondriac Ira, who with his frenetic entrances might as well be named Cosmo Kramer; and Wayne Temple as Milt, whose jokes may be corny but whose timing is unmatched. In between laughs, the show is also an interesting look at 50s McCarthyism and the ominous hold it once had over the entertainment industry. —Marissa Oberlander $29-$39
