Young Thug, Travi$ Scott

Sun., March 8, 6 p.m.

Few rappers represented the disconnect between major labels and hip-hop’s zeitgeist in 2014 quite like Young Thug. The Atlanta MC was stuck in a convoluted major-label deal—broken down by Buzzfeed in great detail last March—but went on to drop a series of fierce, unstable, fantastic tracks and mixtapes. So while sales for big hip-hop releases mostly tanked and the business world of rap floundered, Thug chalked up win after win. As a result of his radio hit “Stoner” and collaborative mixtapes with Bloody Jay (Black Portland), Gucci Mane (Young Thugga Mane La Flare), and Birdman and Rich Homie Quan (Rich Gang: Tha Tour, Part 1), Young Thug claimed his spot at the top of the Atlanta hip-hop hierarchy and helped his hometown stay at the forefront of the national scene. On his best tracks Thug reshapes the DNA of every word by dropping blurred, fast-paced bars and slippery, emotive coos with an intuitive, cool ease. His exciting rapping style is the equivalent of a roller-coaster thrumming forward without a set course, and his multifaceted performances have subtle new pulses waiting to be discovered every time you press play. Thug and young Atlanta “it” producer Metro Boomin—who DJs tonight’s concert—are prepping a full-length as Metro Thuggin, and early drops like “Speed Racer” and “Warrior” show that the former is still moving in strange, unexpected directions. —Leor Galil $29.50
