Even Sometimes When I Can’t See You

Even Sometimes When I Can’t See You

Donnell Williams

When: Sat., Dec. 4 2010
Price: $10-$12
This third showcase in Ayako Kato's Dance Union series features Suzy Grant wearing a bubble-wrap gown. Grant addresses racial and sexual identity issues in Even Sometimes When I Can't See You, an autobiographical text-and-movement solo she performs with a video manifestation of her drag persona, Rocco Granite. A natty songster, Rocco appears in the second half of the piece wearing a coat and tie and exuding Chaplinesque seriocomic charm. Grant's mostly improvised movements and expressive use of her hands and face reinforce the emotional subtext of her story even as her offhand, bluntly humorous telling belies its pathos. Also on the program: Lisa Frank's collaborative ensemble, OosImaginary, exploring the "possibilities of narrative and storytelling within an improvisational structure"; Erin Carlisle Norton and the Moving Architects in Norton's new March of the Oys, a takeoff on "March of the Toys" set to Frank Rosaly's percussive music; and an excerpt from Rachel Bunting's evening-length work in progress, Paper Shoes, which she describes as "dark and moody." --Laura Molzahn
