You were expecting maybe Splatter Santa? Despite Annoyance Theatre's reputation for gross-out pastiche, this 70-minute re-creation of the beloved 1964 TV holiday special is positively reverent toward its stop-action source. Adding real flesh and a third dimension renders the tale of misfits who make good--abandoned toys, an elf who wants to be a dentist, a gold prospector willing settle for peppermint, and, of course, the reindeer with the incandescent proboscis--all the more believable. Megan Kelleher puts her dozen actors through some folksy frolics, and though the acting sometimes seems as jerky as the original animation, the cast give their all to familiar characters like the mischievous Snow Monster, Sam the Snowman, Rudy's less-than-supportive parents, and his skeptical sleighmates. The songs, especially "Holly, Jolly Christmas," are worth reviving. --Lawrence Bommer
