Hilariously over-the-top performances compensate for spotty material in this touring version of Mel Brooks's 2007 stage show based on his shtick-shtupped 1974 film comedy. Roger Bart, Cory English, and Shuler Hensley repeat their Broadway roles as mad scientist "Freddy" Frankenstein, his demented assistant Igor, and the monster (a character Hensley also played, to considerably different effect, in the 2004 horror flick Van Helsing). Beth Curry and Anne Horak are spot-on as Frankenstein's love interests, Joanna Glushak is a hoot as creepy housekeeper Frau Blucher, and Brad Oscar just about steals the show as the blind hermit who nearly kills the monster while trying to befriend him. Director-choreographer Susan Stroman's gimmicky dances are flawlessly executed by a top-notch ensemble, Robin Wagner's elaborate set design re-creates the ambience of the old Universal horror flicks, and Brooks's score both spoofs and salutes Irving Berlin, paving the way for a showstopping rendition of Berlin's "Puttin' on the Ritz." --Albert Williams
