Edgar Allan Poe's obsession with the beauty, briefness, and cruelty of life provides rich material for Noelle Krimm's hour-long, promenade-style homage. Krimm conceived and curated this compendium of stunning installations and performances by an impressive array of designers, dancers, and actors from across the Chicago fringe community. Mounted onstage, backstage, and even in an alley, the pieces range from puppet theater (Dan Kerr-Hobert and Bernie McGovern's version of "The Conqueror Worm") to a strobe-lit chamber occupied by a maniac a la David Berkowitz (Seth Bockley's take on "The Pit and the Pendulum"). Ingenious visual work (including a gallery of Joseph Cornell-esque illuminated boxes) and evocative performances add up to a mournful, creepy, fervently imaginative exploration of Poe's nightmares--and our own. --Kerry Reid
