The 1980 film Nine to Five, about a trio of female office workers who take revenge on their bigoted boss, never quite lived up to its promise as a cinematic send-up of the sexist old boys' club of late-70s corporate America. That we make fewer demands on stage-bound musical comedies benefits this production by Dolly Parton, who wrote the score, and Patricia Resnick, who wrote the book (and cowrote the film, too). Sweet, shallow satire mixes well here with bouncy songs and comic characters. David H. Bell's sprightly direction guarantees there's not a slow moment; credit also goes to a fine cast of triple-threats, led by Alexandra Palkovic, Kelli Cramer, and Susan Moniz (playing roles made famous by Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda). —Jack Helbig
