Ami Ankilewitz—a severely emaciated 34-year-old suffering from a rare form of muscular dystrophy—travels across the U.S. in search of the doctor who predicted he wouldn't live past the age of six. Some may find Ankilewitz's story inspiring (he's become an accomplished animator despite having use of only one finger), but documentarian Dani Menkin avoids some tough questions. Why did Ankilewitz's Mexican mother and Israeli father divorce? Is his sexy Romanian caretaker really such a tease, or is she only playing to the camera? The drain of incessantly caring for someone so disabled is barely addressed, and Ankilewitz's reunion with his estranged brother feels stage-managed. A more honest film would have been a greater tribute to this brave and tenacious fighter. In English and subtitled Hebrew and Spanish. 74 min.
