Long after Tauheed "2 Chainz" Epps exhausts his current moment in the pop-rap spotlight, his story will surely live on as an example of the power of a name—it should be taught in marketing courses everywhere. As "Tity Boi" (what he called himself till early last year, both as half of the duo Playaz Circle and as a solo artist), Epps was for the longest time a hip-hop underdog, the kind that heads would hold up as an example of an underground artist who deserved marquee recognition. Then he became 2 Chainz, got cameos on a ton of big songs (the biggest being Kanye West's "Mercy"), and suddenly became exactly as much of a star as we'd always hoped he would. His recent Based on a T.R.U. Story (Def Jam) is a slick but hilariously enjoyable album featuring guest turns by Kanye, The-Dream, Nicki Minaj, and a few other hip-hop A-listers, with top-notch production and approximately as many puns as you'd expect from Epps at this point.
