Best Barbecue, readers' choice: Smoque

Honey 1 Barbeque

The sweet scent of wood smoke provides the backdrop for Chicago’s holy trinity of barbecue: spare ribs, tips, and hot links. Ribs have an almost delicate exterior, their crisp outer layer yielding to moist, flavorful flesh, tender yet toothsome and subtly enhanced by smoke as opposed to being overpowering. Tips have a bit of fat and are chewy, gnarly, and bursting with pockets of flavor—time to get your caveman on. Hot links are juicy and authoritatively spiced, pairing perfectly with the ubiquitous white bread and a drizzle of Honey 1’s house sauce. An artist with an eight-foot Chicago-style aquarium, pit man Robert Adams makes barbecue that’s as much a piece of Americana as a Norman Rockwell painting—Adams’s medium just happens to be pig. Smoque may be flavorful, but where's the meat?? Small portions and the sauce does not have the flavors I like and is very thin and runny. Sorry but I have had far better, say at Uncle Bub's BBQ in Westmont on Cass Ave. Thumbs down for Smoque!!

I have tried honey1 and the food was good. Smoque was also good, but I agree the sauce just doesnt get it for me. I've also tried Fat Willies, and a place that needs to be closed called Smokin M's, where the food was aweful. However there is a new barbeque restaurant in North Chicago IL (up by the Gurnee/Waukegan area) that is awesome. The place is Called "Big Ed's BBQ" OMG the food is awesome. I have tried everything on the menu and have yet to be disappointed. Ribs, Brisket, Pulled Pork and real Mac and cheese. If you are ever up that way, be sure to make that stop. It's really worth the trip!

Smoque? Overrated by everyone.

If you want real barbeque, which is smoked meat, then go to Honky Tonk Barbeque on 18th Street in Pilsen.

You won't be able to get the smell off your fingers when you finish your meal.
