Reader’s Choice Gallery Cabaret

It’s true that the Gallery Cabaret’s Sunday open mikes tend to attract a higher quality of performer than the average open mike, but in the alternate musical dimension that open mikes reside in, “quality” isn’t all that important a quality. What makes the Gallery Cabaret one of the only open mikes in the city worth going out of your way for is the number and variety of musical oddities you’re bound to find on display. You want to see a septuagenarian woman, a metalhead in an Yngvie shirt, and a Ren Faire devotee collaborate on an ode to smoking weed? How about a boyfriend-girlfriend duo doing a strangely compelling update of Captain and Tennille-style lounge soul? It’s all here, and pretty much nowhere else. Fred (host of the later Sunday open mike) doesn't go on line but wanted me to thank you Dear Reader for recognizing the rare essence of Sunday Open Mike @ The Gallery Cabaret. And I want to thank you for the mention of my original act, Fairly Unbalanced, albeit by description rather than by name. I am the old lady; the metalhead is my "son-in-law" Greg and the Renaissance Faire Devotee, his wife (and Fred's daughter) Belinda (to whom I am Jewish Fairy GodMother). I do want to correct one error, though; I am a sexagenarian, not septuagenarian - won't be 70 until 2112! Hope everyone has a great rest of the Independence Day weekend. You really missed out by not mentioning the jazz singer open mic, second Monday of the month at Katerina's. Hosted by one of Chicago's best vocalists, Typhanie Monique, the backing players are the phenomenal Ben Lewis on keys and Lorin Cohen on bass. It's worth the $5 cover just to hear the killer short sets these three present, often fully improvised.

The singers who show up are generally very good, often great. The drinks are great and food reasonable. CHECK IT OUT!!!

ooops, I just re-read what I posted, and I will be 70 in 2012, NOT 2112.

Also wanted to add another thing that makes the Sunday night Open Mike @ The Gallery Cabaret so distinctive, is the generous and delicious spread (full dinner) served gratis to performers and patrons alike, every single Sunday night.

One of the newer open mics but really picking up steam is "Open Arms Open Mic" at the Leadway bar & grill. The two hosts, Spike McGuire and Ryan Murphy are great singer song writers and can be funny as hell also. My wife and I made the trek to Leadway after seeing Spike doing improv at "ph" last weekend. He is as good at music as improv! He keeps the night moving and it's like you're just partying at his house with a bunch of really talented friends.
