WHPK
My reason for choosing the tiny WHPK over indie powerhouse WLUW is that poor ’LUW bears so much responsibility for being the “progressive, community-oriented radio station,” that WBEZ ought to be, “committed to social justice and independent thought and expression, and to giving a voice to those who too often go unheard,” that it can’t just say fuck-all and be a good old-fashioned youthfully self-indulgent college radio station. On WHPK, microspecialty shows like Qwee! (“where the music is cuter than both the boys and the squirrels”) and Arrhythmia (“where Colin and Jenn will make your heart jump with the sounds of frantic drumming, creepy odes to Jacoby Ellsbury, and anarchist clatter”) bump up against international samplers like Rendezvous Afrika and Gateway to Brazil, DIY talk shows, and the long-running live show Pure Hype. It “broadcasts” from the University of Chicago on 100 watts of sheer willpower, but on the north side you can listen at whpk.org/stream. —Monica Kendrick

Thank you Monica and The Reader, for recognizing WHPK as the "best college radio station."
As a 10 year + member of the station,we try our best to bring the finest programs ever to hit the radio dial. (and beyond thanks to the internet )
For a college radio station that's been serving the community for 62 years,(63 years in a few months)this is a absolute honor.
Thanks so much
Gary T. (WHPK station member)

I would like to give readers an opportunity to listen to my show Thursdays from 6 am to 9 am. I play all the obscure punk hits of yesterday and today that will have you jumping up in down and wailing your air guitar in sharp fits. Like what I do!
WHPK Rules!

Not arguing here, but i wonder why you pointedly write...
"...tiny WHPK over indie powerhouse WLUW..."
They're both 100 watts.
Can't get one on the north side, can't get the other on the south side.

OK... so all being things equal (100 watts each and both streaming on the web)... why is WLUW a "powerhouse"?

WLUW has the largest listener base of college radio stations in the city.

After almost 10 years of being on the air, I can honestly say that we are a "powerhouse" because we play what other stations don't. From "Dimension Latina" which plays salsa, merengue and cumbia, "The Hip Hop Project" which plays Hip Hop NOT rap and showcases homegrown and national heavy hitters in the Hip Hop world and "The Groove Temple" Chicago’s answer to the evolution of HOUSE music since the cessation of WBMX. To my knowledge, no other 100 watts station covers the entire spectrum that we do. And yeah, we’ve been streaming for a while too!

Hey, Groove Temple man:
WHPK hits all those spots on the spectrum, too - and for almost 63 years. Check out our schedule: http://whpk.org/schedule/
Latino music shows: El Tornado Tropical (salsa) and Voces de la Cancion Mexicana (traditional Mexican music)
Hip hop: we have several, but notably we have JP Chill's show - the oldest in the Midwest, possibly the country - and CTA Radio with Pugz Atoms & co, as featured on MTV2's Scribble Jam.
House music: Sunday live mix program from 10pm to 12am
But let's not hate & compete...100 watt stations unite!
