- A design from Eskell, which is holding a pre-holiday sale starting Saturday.
TONIGHT
It's rare that you see the words "fashion" and "Nobel Peace Prize" in the same press release, but tonight womenswear designer Marcia Patmos of
Lutz & Patmos will reveal a new piece created in collaboration with Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu. A portion of the proceeds from sales will go to the Desmond Tutu Peace Centre and the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust. It's at a private home and runs from 3 to 9 PM; call 312-375-4754 to RSVP.

The Tribune reports that Joan Weinstein, the original owner of influential Oak Street designer boutique Ultimo, died on Sunday.
Weinstein was credited with bringing a new level of sophistication to Chicago shopping with her multi-designer shop. One of her former employees is Ikram Goldman, who went on to open her own boutique and considered Weinstein a mentor.

Whet e-mailed me with a fashion dilemma: "Now that it's getting cold, I'm looking for a hat that will keep me warm and not make me look like a doofus—something a bit more fashionable than a beanie, more elegant than a hunter/bomber hat."

Insta-hit Web site Regretsy, devoted to making fun of items found on crafty commerce site Etsy, recently featured a necklace of copulating earthworms by Peggy Stemp of Heron Adornment, whose intricate, science-inspired jewelry I blogged about this summer.

I'm pretty picky about sweaters. Crewneck sweaters especially often tend to be too boxy and bulky, suitable only to be paired with a headband and a double strand of pearls. The cashmere crewneck sweater ($128) from Aqua, one of Bloomingdales' in-house brands, is narrow and fitted, and the knit is thin enough so you can wear it under a jacket without turning into the Michelin Man. Besides the magenta and black listed on the Web site, I also saw gray and navy at the store at 900 N. Michigan.

Yes, I want the red, strapless, deep-V-waisted Jean Desses Couture silk chiffon dress that is on the cover of Leslie Hindman's current vintage clothing and accessories auction catalog, even if they call it coral and even if it does come with numerous stains and loose stitches.

The
New York Times Style section has an
article today about the resurgence of Victorian fashion, particularly for men, and traces it directly to the increasing popularity of
"tweed rides" like the one I posted about earlier this week.
