Chicago Opera Vanguard Premieres Chicago AIDS Quilt Songbook

Posted by Albert Williams on Fri, Nov 27, 2009 at 9:39 AM

Chicago Opera Vanguard—which is quickly carving a niche for itself with productions of edgy music theater works like Andy Vores's No Exit, Mark-Anthony Turnage's Greek, and Ricky Ian Gordon's Orpheus and Euridice—will present the world premiere of The Chicago AIDS Quilt Songbook 2009 on World AIDS Day, Monday December 1.

The concert will take place at the Center on Halsted, 3656 N. Halsted, and proceeds benefit the Center's programs. COV artistic director Eric Reda has commissioned works from a wide variety of writers working in various musical genres, from classical to cabaret. Contributors include Reader columnist Dan Savage, local playwrights Lisa Dillman and Philip Dawkins, Obie-winning composer Josh Schmidt, CUBE Ensemble members Patricia Morehead and Lawrence Axelrod, and many others. The 8 PM concert will be preceded by a reception at 6:30 PM. VIP tickets are $40, and general admission is $20. Tickets can be purchased online at www.centeronhalsted.org or at the door.
