It culminates in the three-story Chalet. For $495 a weekend night, customers get a two-car heated garage, 12-foot-high sunset mural, whirlpool, four-sided glass fireplace, hot tub, steam room, wet bar, and ten-foot slide that swerves from the bedroom loft into the 24-foot swimming pool. No windows. The Chalet was inspired, Knudson says, by the grotto inside the Playboy mansion, where he once taught karate to jazz drummer Buddy Rich: "I had the benefit and the joy of wandering around in this magnificent environment—aw, man, the swimming pool! Palm trees! Waterfall! Wild! I said, God, wouldn't that be the greatest feeling in the world to let the average guy experience this?"

Dudes just don't go from teaching karate to Buddy Rich to starting suburban nookie hotel chains for the purpose of saving American matrimony like they used to.
