An Eater's Reading Roundup

Jennifer Reese, aka the food blogger Tipsy Baker—the daughter and granddaughter of ranchers, who's amassing her own backyard menagerie—weighs in with a refreshingly contrarian review of Jonathan Safran Foer's new book, Eating Animals, "a compelling manifesto swaddled in a muddled and pretentious memoir about one squeamish and idealistic young man's distaste for eating flesh."

On the other hand, recent studies of porcine cognition detailed the other day in the New York Times incline one to think that eating pork is not so far from cannibalism: "Pigs like to lie around, they like to drink if given the chance, they’ll smoke and watch TV."

A bit belated, but nonetheless notable: an August piece from the online magazine Guernica. Detroit has zero—ZERO!— produce-carrying grocery stores, but acre upon acre of arable land. Could it, like Havana, Hanoi, Dakar, and Cuenca, Equador, come to produce half its own food supply—or even more—through soil remediation and agriculture?

And an item for the green-thumbed city dweller's wish list: the hydroponic window.
