The Cigars and Stripes Freaktoberfest Beer Tasting offers more than 60 seasonal brews, including Schmaltz Brewing Company’s Freaktoberfest Blood Red Lager and Sword Swallower Steel Hop Lager, all part of its Coney Island line. Sideshow-style entertainment will be provided in the bar’s vintage tent, along with Coney Island hot dogs for sale. Halloween costumes are encouraged. 7-10 PM, Cigars & Stripes, 6715 W. David Sax, author of Save the Deli: In Search of Perfect Pastrami, Crusty Rye, and the Heart of Jewish Delicatessen, signs his book and discusses his travels in search of authentic American delicatessens. In conjunction with its Heartland exhibit, the Smart Museum of Art presents the lunch-hour talk Soul of the Heartland: Chicago Religion, Nature, and Food, by Martin Marty, professor emeritus at the U. of C.
