The Reader's fiction issue, which comes out at the end of December, is an annual collection of work from mostly local fiction writers paired with mostly local illustrators. Our fiction issue archive includes some fantastic contributions and some names you should recognize. This year's edition will be our ninth and there's still time to get in on it:
We'll be considering submissions for another month. Send them to fiction@chicagoreader.com. We prefer text pasted into email rather than attachments. It's hard to find room these days for pieces over 10,000 words, but generally we're flexible on length.
We pay for those we publish, of course.Showing 1-16 of 16
I hope you enjoyed reading my submissions. I have been a fan of the Chicago Reader for many years. It would be an honor to have excerpts from my 3 books, available on Amazon.com, to appear in the Reader's fiction selections!...Sincerely, Rich Cronborg, Chicago artist/author
I have no doubt that the archive is filled with excellent material, but suggesting I read it to determine the answer to a standard guideline question seems a bit silly.
Why would a submission request not actually cover what the publication is looking for? What if this edition is seeking a different theme from what has been published previously?

Just a quick question that I thought other writers might have as well: Is there any way to get a confirmation that you have actually received my story? I e-mailed it last week, but I didn't want to follow-up with a "didja get it?" e-mail. I guess I expected an auto-response e-mail letting me know that you'd received it.
Thanks for the help,
Sara
No reason to suspect it hasn't arrived. I'll reply to all submissions at the same time, once I've made my selection. If you haven't heard back yet, no one has. Thanks for your patience.
