Next Week's Outrage Today: Tucker Max CTA ads

Posted by Whet Moser on Wed, Sep 16, 2009 at 5:46 PM

Eric Zorn has an unconfirmed spotting of a horrendously offensive ad for Tucker Max's new movie on a CTA bus. Coincidentally, we got a letter to the editor today spotting a different, no less offensive one ("Strippers will not tolerate disrespect...HAHA, just kidding!").

I'm going to go ahead and set the over/under on "CTA pulls ads, does embarrassed public groveling" for Tuesday. That seems like sufficient time for heat to build and for the CTA to realize that ironic misogyny isn't something they should be parading around town.

Letter to the editor after the jump.

[Update: What does "Deaf girls can't hear you coming" even mean? My first thought was that it's a double entendre, because I couldn't imagine it's referring to assault. Now I'm just confused. Tucker Max: discovering levels of misogyny that I can't even comprehend.]

[Update II: Max tries his damnedest to put air quotes around his misogyny. Sometimes he forgets.]

Dear Chicago Reader,

I was appalled today at an ad on the side of a CTA bus: "Strippers will not tolerate disrespect...HAHA, just kidding!" The ad is for the new Tucker Max movie, a film that glorifies the mistreatment and sexual exploitation of women.

I am outraged that this foul message is being endorsed and publicized by my city. It is not funny—it is abusive, and it must be removed from the buses. CTA authorities should be ashamed.

You are fucking retarded! Why are you offended? Was your mom a stripper?

Strippers show people their private parts for one dollar. They're not exactly paragons of respect.

Men can be strippers too, Leah Pine you fat cow.
Now shut your damn pie hole, and make me a sandwhich.

i am too slow to figure out what's so offensive about the content of this ad?

Posted by lykorian on September 16, 2009 at 6:55 PM | Report this comment

But the ad doesn't say "Strippers are not exactly paragons of respect." It says that they will tolerate disrespect--and it wants us to find that funny.

Seriously, are you actually saying that, because you find strippers contemptible, they must therefore be perfectly happy to be disrespected?

Can you see how insanely self-centered and callous that view of the world is?

Read the book before you bitch. Bitch. I'm a female who LOVES tucker max and what he has written. I book the day off work to go see his movie on opening night. Tucker has MANY MANY MANY female fans.

I'm offended by religious ads on the buses, but I don't bitch and complain. What you're trying to do is censorship.

He's a fucking frat douche, you're not in college anymore, yet you still act like you are. Ha. What a joke. And lets be honest he's probably got the HIV, not full blown aids just yet. Haha. His movie is a cheap rip-off of the hangover.

"A Cheap rip-off of the hangover"... too bad his shit's real.
douchebag.

Pretty much anything written about Tucker Max's misogyny and sexism really isn't complete without his fans stopping by and proving the point.

It's like having the blog software write your conclusion for you. I wish the rest of my job was this easy.

haha a cheap rip off of the hangover, that is based off of his life, which he has been writing for a few years. good call vicky. effin cum dumpster

If the CTA refused to run the ads, even though Tucker Max's people were willing to pay good money for the space just like everybody else, I could see maybe characterizing that as censorship.

But if the CTA gets a boatload of complaints and pulls the ads, that's not censorship. That's community standards. Sure, the process privileges noisy interest groups and imperfectly reflects "the will of the people," but it's hardly censorship.

That said, I have no dog in this fight. I don't give two shits in a wet biscuit for Tucker Max, and I'm pretty desensitized to stupid ads. I only stopped here because I was momentarily distracted by a bright flash of idiocy in my peripheral vision. Good night.

who ever you are leah pine, you must be a loser. there is nothing bad about tucker max that insults and exploits women. people can care less about what you think.

stop trying to change the world, because its evident you sit here whining and complaining because u simply do not have any friends. im sure no one really cares a flying f about u. get a life.

whet, is tucker max responsible for some (most? all?) of his fans being morons? i think not. comedy, be it satire or otherwise, shouldn't have to make apologies for bad taste. and i still can't figure what's offensive about disrespecting strippers. what's "offensive" about disrespecting anybody, even? pardon me for taking offense at the overuse of the quoted term.

Posted by lykorian on September 16, 2009 at 8:46 PM | Report this comment

Yah, you're all completely right, all of his stories are 100% true I'm sure. Too bad I know for a fact that he adds shit into his stories that aren't true. Ha. I read the book before it was 'the cool thing to do', its ok, but lets be honest, anyone could write a book about their ridiculous sex lives, he just got lucky.

Its really funny how if someone writes a book and says its all true, everyone will believe them no matter what. Ha.

Also, really funny how all of you are so quick to defend Tucker, like he's your fucking bff. Ha. Quite sad. He'd probably hate on every one of you if you ever met him. Ha. Ok, NOW I get it. You're right, he's a badass and I wish I were him too. Ha.

@lykorian:

"is tucker max responsible for some (most? all?) of his fans being morons?"

Yes.

"i still can't figure what's offensive about disrespecting strippers"

That's not the point of the "joke." The point of it is that most people won't tolerate disrespect, but strippers will because they're strippers, which means they have to take it because it's their job, or because they're already so debased because they take off their clothes for money, etc etc.

Helpful?

"what's "offensive" about disrespecting anybody, even?"

I don't have a response, I just thought that was a funny thing to write.

weather or not this guy is telling the truth in his stories.....or its (i hope they serve beer in hell) a ripoff of a current movie (which clearly is not the case, tucker having been writing these stories for as long as he has) isnt the point at all. the generation that perscribes to his sense of humor is our nations future. if that really scares the hell out of you then hide at home because this will only become more common. every generation has brought what is seen as a morbid change in some facet of our society (remember when elvis used to shke his hips on stage?) and it seems to me that comedy is one of the things that is chnanging rapidly with todays younger generation. more and more we see it accepted to be malicious, vulgar, repulsive, ....whatever you want to call it.....more profanity more sex more shit more berating......thats what they see as funny. you wont change it no matter how hard you try and if you cant respect a guy for striking a chord with an entire generation (and some) to the point where society categorizes a form of writing (fratire) and a whole brand of humor under his legend then you're fucking stubborn...... grow up and accept the change......you're probably the same people who thought it was awesome to have a black president and now you're second guessing 'cause he called a jackass a jackass

Tucker likes the things he does, so good for him. Who the fuck are you to condemn this joke (are you a stripper?) or any of his jokes or behaviour for that matter? You sit there and judge him and think it makes one godamn piece of difference. It doesn't. What made you the moral police? Go live your life.

@whet

honestly, i'm not quite sure how to interpret the "joke"... it seems intentionally vague, and most likely exists only to provoke a response (mission accomplished). i'd never read a word of tucker max's stuff until yesterday, so it's not like i'm here to defend my comedic interests, but it's interesting to see what i think is an overreaction to something that is far more stupid than offensive.

Hey Morons, Tuckers the one who wrote that letter to the editor! THis is what he does! He creates fake contraversey. He even said in his blog that they are simply sitting back and pulling the strings to this. They somehow convinced the CTA to put up some offensive ads, probably because they're a little subtle. And then he writes in as a concerned citizen, talking about how appalling they are. His minions are probably at least 20% of the posters in this thread, both complaining and supporting. Again, this is what he does! His goal is to get a CTA Press Conference apology about the whole ordeal, where all of the news covers it, and guess what....it's 1 week from his movie!!!! Nice inexpensive press to the 3rd largest market in the country, days before his movie opens!!

Tucker Max has a three inch penis.

Posted by jbird on September 17, 2009 at 11:43 AM | Report this comment

I'm not offended by the ads. I just don't think they're very funny jokes. Just like most of Max's writing, which cries out for people to be disgusted and provoked - not terribly funny. Being outraged by stuff like this is such a knee-jerk reaction, and it's one that keeps the Tucker Maxes of the world in the spotlight. Better to ignore him and his movie altogether.

Rape is not funny. Bigotry is for flaccid limp little cowards. Thanks to all the bigot boyz on this thread showing the world how small and limp your penises are. No wonder no women will talk to you IRL. No women talk to Tucker Max either, but at least he figured out how to bilk you frigging morons out of your money.

Posted by LadyM on September 17, 2009 at 3:49 PM | Report this comment

Okay Tucker Max apologists who can't (or refuse) to understand: here's why the ad is a problem. Women already face tremendous sexual harassment and violence on CTA trains and buses, including rape threats and nonconsensual contact. For decades CTA and the city have ignored the problem, while happily accepting female passengers' money.

What makes THIS ad even more atrocious is the incitement to assault hearing-impaired women, because they can't "hear you coming" anyway. Rape and sexual harassment are real folks, and they exact real consequences on women and children who are doing nothing more than traveling to work or school and living their lives.

Posted by logicapple on September 17, 2009 at 7:49 PM | Report this comment

I'd be careful about posting this before confirming the existence of these ads. Five bucks says the TM team considers lying and baiting media outlets "viral marketing." In fact, I'm pretty sure these so-called ads which were supposedly rejected by an ad agency or something were made just to stir up a little buzz for a movie no one wants to see anyway.

@memen

The ads in the pic at this link don't look to be on CTA property (and I doubt they're even in Chicago), but they do appear to exist.

logicapple, if your argument is that the tucker max ads encourage violence towards women, you're ridiculous. i suppose you also oppose graphic video games, explicit lyrics in rock music, and illicit sexual behavior in movies for corrupting america's moral fiber.

Goddamn you have to be ignorant to think this shit is ok.

Anybody looking at a stripper's private parts is not a paragon of respect either. There wouldn't be strippers if it wasn't for perverts.
