Mayor Daley's Olympic Promise

Posted by Ben Joravsky on Mon, May 11, 2009 at 6:59 PM

There's a great article about the Olympics by Sam Cholke in the latest issue of the Hyde Park Herald. He asked everyone from Olympic boosters to a constitutional scholar if the 2016 Olympic committee's Memorandum of Understanding was legally binding.

The results? The boosters said of course. It's a great and wonderful document and God bless Mayor Daley!

The legal scholar said it was not legally binding.

In this case, I find the law professor more convincing. But let's say the contract is legally binding. Who's going to enforce it? Who's going to have enough money to hire a lawyer to take it to court? Or more important, where are they going to find a judge willing to rule against the mayor?

Right now the only group that can protect us from these games is the International Olympic Committee.

The version I read wasn't binding in the sense that any worker or community group would mean. It's legally binding in the sense that it's a part of the Council record, so that's probably what the supporters mean. One always has to define these terms.

Having read it again, along with the Hyde Park Herald article, it's not binding in the sense that, if the City of Chicago did something completely different from what the MOU says, and the workers who were supposed to get jobs tried to sue, they would be thrown out of court for not having a case. Anyone who says that it's "legally binding" must be using some other definition of what it means to be "legally binding."

This is a mess. I hope Mayor Daley comes to his senses and says he is sorry. He is a silly rascal!

Daley and Chicago have nothling to show and are unable to compete with the other cities. Therefore, he is going to pull Barack Obama out of his ass as a last resort. He may pull it off. Let the Bastard Daley burn in Hell.

President Obama has enough to eat on his plate with getting the economy back on track and health care for all Americans. Let the right wing Republican Mayor Daley fight his own wars with the people of Chicago. Hopefully they'll wake up in the next elections and vote him and his team cut throats at city hall out of office.

On Oct. 3,2009 this sham will be over. No phony letters to the taxpayers or bogus media coverage will remove the facts of life in chicago. Daley has always had a carrot on a stick in this town and with the current topics at hand; Highest taxes in nation cutback in services city layoffs broken EDU system broken transit system high violence non effective policing destruction of nieghborhoods All these issues that are ignored because one personn is dreaming about some games is just as silly as anyone could imagine. At this point who could argue that daley is a good anything, the criminals that defraud the taxpayers might have a case but after them who's left. The Alderman that voted for, all these corrupt minded Ordinances, (ie, developing contaminated land and then putting the contaminated soil in our communities to save transportation cost). On Oct 3,2009 Irish, Italian, Black, Hispanic, Polish, Asian and every other color of the universe will have TWO HUGE PROBLEMS that they can take control over. 1) retard daley 2) City council VOTE ALL INCUMBANTS OUT,

Thanks for the mention, Ben. Hopefully the story at least raised some interest in where groups think we are in drafting rules governing Olympic-related development. I noticed the link to the story now goes to the May 13 edition of the Herald, so I put the story up on my web site: http://cholke.com/blog/?p=51

Chicago would be mortgaged for the next 20 years to pay for Daley's 11 day circus. The question is will Prez Obama put his political Capital on the line,to help Daley and his pirates?

The Olympic bust out, Obama has proven to this point, he is no different than Bush. When are we going to feel the trickle down of the $billions$ o our our taxpaying dollars given to the Banks/Auto industry? Why didn't Obama just write all of us a check for $200,000.00 .That would have stimulated me! Anyway, Obama is a Daley pct worker at the National level! Obam will give Daley the money....our money!!!

Don't elect crooks like Obama and you won't have to worry about him giving your money away. :)

Thank you for your valiant efforts to shed some light on this issue. Would you please post contact info for the IOC, and often, so that everyone might get on board and inform them that there is not universal consent for this ridiculous sham?
