Black power, Chicago style

Posted by Ben Joravsky on Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 1:16 PM

Having gone over the numbers several times, I still can't get over the rock-solid support black Chicago gave President-elect Barack Obama in Tuesday's elections.

The pollsters coming in to the election predicted Obama would win at least 90 percent of the black vote nationwide. But in Chicago it was over 99 percent -- at least in the five wards that are almost 100 percent black. To be exact, he won 99.27 percent of the vote in the 6th Ward, 99.19 percent in the 8th, 99.24 percent in the 21st, 99.21 percent in the 24th, and 99.40 percent in the 34th.

By my count, Obama won 100 percent of the vote in 59 precincts. His best was the 57th Precinct of the far-south-side 34th Ward, where he captured all 563 votes. Even the great Harold Washington didn't rack up this much support in his 1983 triumph over Bernie Epton

Too bad we don't see this kind of spirit and mobilization in mayoral elections.

It is called racism, it is alive and well in Chicago. Obama has been packaged well by Daley and Axelrod. Some day you will figure this out.

It is funny that Blacks gave 100% of their vote to a man who does not identify with them at all. Valerie Jarret and Michelle Obama where both in the Daley Department of Planning when they were selling out neighborhoods with gentrification. Daley has done ethnic cleansing. Barack Obama was silent on Jon Burge and torture. The Blacks will get nothing from Obama. Look at his first picks. Valerie Jarret ran the CTA, now she can ruin DC.

This was no mistake on Emanuel's part. Rahm Emanuel has a long history of militarist ideology behind him. His father was a member of the ultra-right-wing terrorist organization Etzel that killed British civilians as part of their anti-British struggle in Palestine in the 1940s. Emanuel, himself a citizen of Israel as well as the United States, has been one of several Congressional leaders enforcing the "Israel Lobby" concensus on the Democrats, in the process shutting out the peace voices that believe Israel's security would be better served by the U.S. putting pressure on Israel to end the Occupation, move the Wall to inside the pre-67 boundaries, and remove the settlers from the West Bank or tell them to live there as Palestinian citizens.

if the first three comments weren't so pathetic, they would be funny. obviously, ben and zp are not part of and are not familiar with the african-american community in chicago, especially the southside, which is where the wards listed are located. the church he used to attend, trinity ucc, is smack in the middle of those wards. learn of what you speak before opening your mouth please. and yitzak, what article were you reading?

The Chicago breakdown by ward and precinct can be found on the Chicago Board of Elections site. I ran the numbers earlier for an article for the Hyde Park Herald and Obama garnered 97.07 percent of the vote in the 3rd, 4th and 5th Wards: his "neighbors." There's another way to think about this besides by ethnicity in Chicago. The people who have been Obama's constituents longest and in some ways know his record best continued to overwhelmingly support him. In other words, to the people who he's a very real person who trick-or-treats with his kids, goes to school meetings and plays basketball at the local gym, not a vessel to be filled with one's personal definition of "hope," he was by far the best choice in the presidential election.

Lou, You are correct, it's a corporation, Chicago politics. A job opens, and someone in the corporation is in line to get promoted, provided they do what the stockholders ceo says! That CEO is Mayor Daley and the stockholders are Pat Ryan, Jerry Joyce, Ed Bedore, Tim Degnan, John+ Bill Daley, and Dick Mell.

1. Congressman Emmanuel did not volunteer or serve in the US Army but he did volunteer in Gulf War I not for the US but for the Israeli Defense Fund (IDF) (claiming only civilian volunteer) 2. Rahm Emmanuel's father was a member of Eretz a terrorist organization that killed British civilians. 3. Hope, change, being civil--is not swearing and yelling and threatening people, and stabbing knives into voodoo dolls and threatening and playing cynical politics and lying to the media. AIPAC said they win no matter what and one of their heads had to resign. Rahm Emmanuel is arrogant and mean spirited and overly partisan. Rahm Emmanuel twisted peoples arms to vote for the Senssenbrenner Immigration bill in a cynical approach to supposedly win seats and more activity in Iran, attacking the President of Iraq, and a military neocon approach. Rahm Emmanuel was elected becaus of the Machine, Richard Daley, Don Tomczak, and the patronage and deals in that ward including HDO. Gregg Goldsner was Rahm Emmanuels campaign manager who was an associate of Al Sanchez (now indicted) and Victor Reyes--people with drug dealers, murderers, hired trucks, and hiring being fixes. Rahm Emmanuel is not good, he is bad and immoral, and not the politics of change and hope. Rahm Emmanuel is completely Machivellean and his only real ideology is power and maybe Zionism.

Ben(dover): Instead of inferring that black who voted for Obama are racist, how about considering that blacks are overwhelmingly Democratic, the most loyal part of the Dem coalition and they voted for their nominee. The racism on election day was exhibited in so-called Democratic strongholds of Wards 33, 36, 38, 39, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47 who have very "powerful" Committeemen but sat on their hands for Obama.

One candidate for US Senate that has been not been mentioned here is Commissioner Frank Avila of the MWRD. He is a top vote getter. The Senior Latino elected official. More popular than Luis Gutierrez or relatively unknown Gery Chico. For a Congressman to replace Rahm Emmanuel (who had great constituent service) is an underdog and darkhorse is JOHN JOYE who is a MARINE, FIREFIGHTER, Vietnam Veteran, and a son in Afghanistan. He is a populist ordinary citizen who could win this race. He is getting a lot of calls and a lot of smaller community groups are wanting him to be appointed and run for Congress.

Old man Avila gets votes because of his name only not because he is smart or popular. Fact is he is a another do nothing idiot. His claim to fame is he leaked out information to discredit others in his qwest to be prez of MWRD. Fact is he harmed innocent hard working people. Gutierrez is popluar in hiz own mind only. He is against America. He is a socialist. What is the point? Avila Jr is just a plain asshole. Only Coconut likes him. I would him to if he did my legal work for free then again he is not the hotshot lawyer he thinks he is so no thanks. Remember he represented the gangbanger Peterson and made a deal with Wallace Bradley as a urban translator. There is some kind of non payment thing in court between lawyers. oth Avilas are losers.

Big Mortgage Big Idiot, what are you referring to? John Fritchey has done absolutely nothing wrong. People need to stop smearing him for things he has not done. He has worked hard to get where he is and will win the 5th Congressional seat easily if he wishes. there is no one in that group with the experience John has amassed. He has all the legislative experience needed for the job and he has proven to be well rounded in every area. No one has the experience he does. Can you name any one on the list of possible candidates with legislative experience, including international experience that would be better? NO. He is a reformer and would be a shoe in for Rahm Emanuel.

I work for the City, so I'm more or less forced to register Democrat. I have a tendency to vote Republican in national elections because they run the military.

If African Americans who were pro-life and anti-homosexual marriage (according to referendums in 3 states) voted for Barack Obama because he was Black and not on the issues, is that racism? If whites disagreed with Barack Obama on military or foreign policy issues or had concerns about his character, is that racism? There is very little analysis of Barack Obama and a biased media.

Most Latinos are hard working pro-USA not the con artist real estate fraud con man Luis G. A much better pick from the Latino community for US Senator would be either City Clerk former Senator Miguel del Valle or Commissioner Frank Avila of the Sanitary District both would be good and are reform minded and independent
