William Ayers and the company he keeps

Posted by Michael Miner on Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 8:20 PM

Who is Barack Obama?

He’s the Democratic candidate for president.

No, who is he really?

He’s someone who once consorted with William Ayers.

And what do you call people who have consorted?

Gee, a consortium I guess.

Just asking. So who’s William Ayers?

He’s a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He’s published several books and served on important boards.

No. Who is he really?

He used to be a Weatherman. His wife, Bernardine Dohrn, was one too. They were underground for a while. The Reader’s written about them. Here's an excellent cover story by Ben Joravsky and here are a couple of columns by yours truly.

What did the Weathermen do?

Back during the Vietnam war, they planted bombs.

Don’t you find it remarkable that someone who planted bombs now consorts with respectable people?

The only other bomber from that era who’s done as well is John McCain. He bombed Vietnamese.

Tell me more about this consortium.

In 1995 the Annenberg Foundation issued a $49.2 million grant to support school reform in Chicago. Ayers and Obama were both heavily involved in the Chicago campaign to get this money. So was Arnold Weber, former president of Northwestern University. When the grant was announced, Mayor Daley and Governor Edgar said a few words.

That's Daley as in the Daley-Blagojevich-Rezko-Obama cabal? And Edgar as in "I'm just here to keep the seat warm for convicted felon George Ryan"?

I guess.

And isn’t it the Northwestern law school that now employs Ayers’s wife?

I believe it is.

And runs something called the Center on Wrongful Convictions in order to spring convicted cop killers out of prison?

That's so.

Just asking. So who’s this Annenberg fellow?

Walter Annenberg was a prominent Philadelphia publisher whom President Nixon named U.S. ambassador to Great Britain. It's estimated he gave away about $2 billion dollars during his life to various causes, mostly educational.

But who was he really?

He was the son of Moses "Moe" Annenberg, who late in life did time for tax evasion and early in his newspaper career, before he got rich, was hired along with his brother Max by William Randolph Hearst to peddle Hearst’s papers here and see to it anyone trying to peddle the opposition got beaten silly. One of their captains was Dion O’Banion, who became a major bootlegger and mob boss. Capone rubbed him out in 1924.

So when we talk about a consortium we’re talking about Obama and a variety of thugs, terrorists, mob kingpins, crooked pols, and pinko educators spanning decades.

So it seems.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. But don't you think the public ought to know?

What an idiotic piece of crap writing this is. How did a mentally deficient boor like this is ever get a job writing in a major paper? Tells you a lot about the owner's attitude towards its readers. They think we're idiots too. Guess what? We know how to think.

The anti-Obama crowd who enjoy this article should take stock of the damage that has been done to America due to the Trickle down theory and "no tax on the wealthy" Bush Gang. Ayers was wrong but so is the war in Iraq and the war in Viet Nam was not much better.

"Just saw Obama associating with known bomber of Vietnamese at a debate in Nashville." Jano you have a point ;-) Who was fed up with the absurd Vietnam war that caused so much sufferings at home as well as in Vietnam? Who wanted it to stop? And who succeeded in doing so? The American People. And oh yessss.. what about Bush's ties with the Bin Laden family? Or McCain's for that matter...? Hmmmm

Ayers' political views (wiki) In an interview published in 1995, Ayers characterized his political beliefs at that time and in the 1960s and 1970s: "I am a radical, Leftist, small 'c' communist ... [Laughs] Maybe I'm the last communist who is willing to admit it. [Laughs] We have always been small 'c' communists in the sense that we were never in the [Communist] party and never Stalinists. The ethics of Communism still appeal to me. I don't like Lenin as much as the early Marx. I also like Henry David Thoreau, Mother Jones and Jane Addams [...]"[27]In 1970 Ayers was called "a national leader"[28] of the Weatherman organization and "one of the chief theoreticians of the Weathermen".[29] The Weathermen were initially part of the Revolutionary Youth Movement (RYM) within the SDS, splitting from the RYM's Maoists by claiming there was no time to build a vanguard party and that revolutionary war against the United States government and the capitalist system should begin immediately. Their founding document called for the establishment of a "white fighting force" to be allied with the "Black Liberation Movement" and other "anti-colonial" movements[30] to achieve "the destruction of US imperialism and the achievement of a classless world: world communism."[31] In June 1974, the Weather Underground released a 151-page volume titled Prairie Fire, which stated: "We are a guerrilla organization [...] We are communist women and men underground in the United States [...]"[32] The Weatherman leadership, including Bill Ayers, pushed for a radical reformulation of sexual relations under the slogan "Smash Monogamy".[33][34]

Indeed. It's almost as if anybody involved in Chicago politics for any length of time is tarnished by association with, y'know, the crooks who make up Chicago politics. If only there was some way to judge politicians other than by the company they keep....like their character....or their positions on issues. Nah. Too hard. Plus, associates tell you everything you need to know. Look at the terrible things that happened when we let Tom Pendergast's man get selected as VP.

Why couldn't McCain schmooze after the debate? Every vote counts. Because he was tired and he needed to sit down. No, really, why isn't he still there? CSPAN stayed with the crowd for fifteen minutes. They have a policy. They find it illuminating. I wasn't joking! He was tired and he needed to sit down!

ACCEPTING CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS FROM ASSOCIATES OF KNOWN TERRORISTS? The Ayers-Weber-McCain connection. Truth? Guilt by Association? We report. YOU Decide! Arnold R. "Arnie" Weber is a Chicago Annenberg Board Member and Chicago "insider". He was a part of the Nixon White House. Arnie Weber has held other Washington "insider" jobs too. He is a LONGTIME REPUBLICAN DONOR. But get this: Arnie Weber was a BOARD MEMBER of the infamous **CHICAGO ANNNENBERG CHALLENGE** organization, which was founded by known "TERRORIST" Bill Ayers! Sarah Palin was using "guilt by association". This, however, is a two way street but Gov. Palin may not understand this. NEW INFORMATION SHOWS THAT JOHN MCCAIN HAS ACCEPTED "TAINTED" CAMPAIGN MONEY FROM ARNIE WEBER, AN ASSOCIATE OF BILL AYERS. Arnie Weber has given the maximum legal amount of $1,500 to the McCain campaign in 2008. He probably would have given more if allowed by law. In 2008, Arnie Weber made two separate donations of $1,000 and $500 to McCain’s presidential campaign run by EX-LOBBYIST AND WASHINGTON INSIDER RICK DAVIS. I demand that Senator McCain denounce this man, Arnie Weber, and his associations to "terrorists" (as defined by his vice-president, Sarah Palin). I call on Senator McCain to reject these tainted donations. John McCain should then investigate how such a thing could possibly happen inside HIS OWN CAMPAIGN before seeking to cast stones at Senator Obama. McCain's campaign CEO, RICK DAVIS, needs to explain to the AMERICAN VOTERS his reasons for accepting this dirty money. Are they really that desperate to win this election? Doesn't John McCain still believe in the honor that he felt when defending this country against the enemy in Vietnam where he served as a prisoner of war for years? THE "LIBERAL MEDIA" SHOULD ASK JOHN MCCAIN WHY HE ACCEPTED THIS TAINTED CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THIS "TERRORIST" ASSOCIATE. Incredible as it may sound, Arnie Weber doesn't even DENY that he ASSOCIATED FOR YEARS with a "KNOWN TERRORIST". This is probably because he hasn't been asked. Now for the reality check: It turns out that these types of "facts" are simply BASELESS SMEAR ATTACKS WITH NO MERIT! Yes. It is true. Attacks like this are meant to distract the uninformed voters near the end of an election. We don't hear about them very often because most candidates have too much integrity to run them. They know that winning an election based on lies is unacceptable. Besides, people want to talk about REAL issues affecting REAL lives, not play a game of "6 degrees of Kevin Bacon". Random associations are EASY to find. For instance, it turns out that you can trace Obama's FAMILY TREE to both George W. Bush (10th cousins once removed) and Dick Cheney (eighth cousins). Yep! They are legally RELATIVES. This is yet another useless "fact" for Trivial Pursuit lovers, but it is not worthy of any media time in this national election for the greatest country on God's green earth. If you want some more guilt by association, here is something to find out for yourself. Who said this? Who supports this guy and his political party? "The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government. And I won't be buried under their damn flag." Guilt by association is an attack on voters and on the electoral process. Voters need to learn about the issues. Governor Palin should apologize for raising this STUPID guilt by association tactic against Senator Obama. And if she REALLY believes what she is saying, she REALLY should demand that they return "Arnie" Weber's campaign donations. Seriously. To do anything short of that would be blatant hypocrisy. "Sooner or later, people are going to figure out if all you run is negative attack ads you don't have much of a vision for the future or you're not ready to articulate it." [John McCain - The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer - 2/21/2000]

On Wednesday morning, John McCain's campaign released a list of 100 former ambassadors endorsing the GOP presidential nominee. Second on the list, though her name is misspelled, is Leonore Annenberg, currently the president and chairman of the Annenberg Foundation and widow of ambassador and philanthropist Walter Annenberg. Ms. Annenberg was herself the "chief of protocol" at the State Department under President Reagan. If the last name sounds familiar, it's because it also graces the name of the Chicago education board where Arnie Weber and William Ayers sat in the room six times together. Arnie Weber is a McCain campaign contributor. Clearly there is a pattern forming. John McCain ADMITS that the Annenberg foundation harbored a DOMESTIC TERRORIST and now he embraces not only their MONEY but their endorsements! What is NEXT? Will McCain start accepting endorsements from members of Osama bin Laden's family?

First Obama claims that over a TWENTY YEAR period, he never heard a single anti-American racist sermon from Jeremiah Wright … never noticed the anti-American racist literature in the church’s lobby … never agreed to the ‘Black Values System’ that all the church members swore to … never subscribed to the Marxist ‘Black Separation Theology’ espoused on the church’s website … never knew anti-American racist Louis Farrakhan, who the church awarded a life time achievement award to … and, never knew unrepentant terrorist William Ayers, when Obama launched his campaign from Ayer’s living room, sat on a board together, and whose wives worked at the same law firm http://www.prolifeblogs.com/articles/archives/2008/10/devastating_vid.php . Obama also worked with Acorn, who has been caught in massive voter fraud, in behalf of Obama. Obama obviously shares an anti-American racist, and criminal philosophy with some very unsavory people, continues to lie about it, and does not have the character, or integrity to be President of the United States of America !!!

Geez dude, you're a journalist in Chicago (presumably). You should be able to come up with more than just facts available on wikipedia, and vague insinuations. You want to know why the public doesn't hear more about this stuff? Because the people spouting it either have no evidence, or no communication ability to convey that evidence. Which are you?

The main question that should be asked is "Will Obama unfairly help those that helped him get to the presidency?” I believe he will not unfairly help his old "consortium". I do believe his opponent is highly likely to unfairly help his prior consortiums.

But how much did help did Obama get? Nothing from his old "consortium," obviously. Obama made this climb largely on his own wits. I'm not saying he didn't have help, but it certainly didn't come from Ayers. And if Americans like people who pulled themselves up by their own bootstraps, they need to look no further than Obama.
