And now a word from Joe

Posted by Ben Joravsky on Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 3:21 PM

Trust me -- the last thing I want to do is wade in the muck of 49th Ward politics. 'Cause, lord knows, you're all a bunch of lunatics up there.

But, gulp, here I am . . .

I posted yesterday about Don Gordon taking a surprisingly strong stand against construction on Park District property, and that prompted alderman Joe Moore to give me a ring.

"Looks like you're endorsing Don Gordon," he told me.

Well, not really -- just saying I like what he said at the meeting and wished he had said it when he was running for office against you last year.

"Anyone who knows Don Gordon will tell you that in that election his main criticism of me was that I was too critical of the mayor," said Moore. "He was very critical of me in supporting the living wage."

Well, as long as I have you on the phone, how about the latest rumor I'm hearing from your opponents: as soon as Barack Obama's elected president -- if, of course, he is elected -- you'll step down to take a job in his administration and handpick Jim Ginderske as your replacement.

Moore laughed and said: "Yeah, I'm kind of gunning for attorney general. Give me a break. That shows you how delusional and out to lunch they are. They're not going to get rid of me that easy . . . "

The funny thing is that, given Mayor Daley's attitude toward council independents, he probably wouldn't fill Moore's vacancy with anyone Moore recommended. Back in 1990, when former alderman David Orr became county clerk, Daley selected Bob Clarke over Moore, Orr's preference for the vacancy.

One year later Moore defeated Clarke in the regularly scheduled aldermanic election and the rest, as they say, is history.

The irony of ironies is that Gordon probably stands a better chance of getting Daley's nod than Ginderske or anyone else Moore might recommend -- or at least he did until he started sounding off against one of the mayor's pet causes.

My advise to Ginderske, Gordon, or anyone else who wants to become alderman is to suck up to Mayor Daley, praise his vision, and, most important, endorse the Olympics, no matter how much parkland it paves over. That's still the best bet to get ahead in this town.

Mick, in your previous post you say "If we had one -- just one -- alderman willing to consistently speak as strongly as Citizen Gordon [...]". We *do* have one -- his name is Joe Moore and he *did* both speak out forcefully and vote against the relocation of the children's museum. He constantly challenges the mayor, and has been doing so for *years*. So to herald Gordon's one speach at a public meeting where anyone can spout off on anything you wish with no repercussions and no accoutability to Joe Moore's years of speaking out and day-in-day-out work on things like whistleblower protections and an independent office of accountability etc. is really very, very silly.

"He [Moore] constantly challenges the mayor ... " This assertion is conter-factual. Moore's voting record is overwhelmingly rubber-stamp, back-bench, pro-Daley, punctuated once or twice a term with ineffectual though highly-publicized stunt votes. Those stint votes are apparently enough for Moore and his apologists to spin an alternate reality in which Moore is the lost son of Leon Dupres.

"[Don Gordon's] ... main criticism of me was that I was too critical of the mayor," said Moore Moore's characterizations of his opponent's positions are unreliable. No one who is familiar with Moore's City Council voting record would assess it as overly at odds with Daley, rather, Moore chooses to occasionally poke Daley in the eye on issues of no significance to his constituents.

The 'cocorat' & Avila connection is interesting. If Avila really provided news information for some sort of personal gain I would imagine this is unethical in some sort of way. If his son was involved passing on this information it may be possibly crimminal because of its attempt to cause harm. I would think it is certainly worth examining. If guilty Avila should resign before he runs for reelection.

When I went to him after I was fired from the City in 2005 , I wanted to file as a whistleblower. Alderman Moore blew Pat McDrunkin, Charles Walker,Jimmy Osborne and I off! The result is,it sent a message to all City Workers to shut up when they see corruption.

Lying Joe Moore to get a job with the Obama administration? Damn, here I was all set to apply for the post of chief popcorn popper in the White House Theater Room (which would be the only administration post Moore could handle without further screwing up this country)! Hopefully, President Obamawill rid the 49th Ward of the scourge that is Joe Moore by insuring that enough investigators nail Moore's butt in federal court. Rest assured, given Moore's track record, that will not be that difficult.

From your vote in favor of every TIF district and every TIF project before & since, apparently it was not a harbinger of a policy shift. What's up with that? What were your thoughts when you voted in favor of Daley's $500M City bond guarantee for the Olympics? Will Alderman Moore question the short fall of $400,000,000.00 in the 2009 budget. How much of that is due to O'hare expansion? Remember Daley borrowed $500,000,000.00 in 2007 to pay off debts for the Expansion project! To all City Workers , keep hiding and keeping your mouth shut, your Unions will take care of you. HA! Ha! The simple truth is that Joe has run the 49th ward in such a way that he can no longer achieve full community support. In the first elecction, more than half of the voting public stated they wanted Joe fired. Can you imagine that after more than 15 years in office? Half of your "customers" want you fired? Joe then proceeded to spend record amounts of money for a little neighborhood run-off, dragging in the unions to bully for him and otherwise pull every lying, dirty trick in the book to ultimately pull ahead by a couple hundred votes. His response is behave like the smug to anyone he perceives as a non-supporter. Just like he called you to draw that line in the sand, to make you declare which side you are on. His actions are so remarkably slimy and his performance so below par that there is no way in hell the "them" half of his ward will ever support him. Therefore, Joe is in a constant state of battle. It's impossible for him to build consensus, so he'll never get community-wide support for anything. At least half of his ward will always be against anything he proposes. They will also be suspect of his true motives. And that, if you think about it, is why he can never do his job effectively. And don't even get me started on his efforts to undermine Mayor Daley. Joe simply isn't bright enough to even play in that game.

Joe's support of Jim G. might be the best example of his approach to being alderman. Jim was the first guy knocked out of the last aldermanic election; however, he's willing to suck up to Joe, so that's the guy Joe is going to back. Joe surrounds himself with folks less competent than himself because they won't challenge him. That's why the 49th ward is stuck with a bunch of idiots trying to run the place. And of course he's looking for a new job. I think Joe knows he'll never be fully supported in his current position. He's blown it and needs to go elsewhere.

The world does not evolve around the 49th ward. A solution to the problem is term limits on everyone in the Council including Daley. My question to Coconate is,will he organize to get rid of Daley, and not wait until the last moment,to hit the streets.

Last time I saw Joe (donuts at the Morse L right after the runoff) I asked him why 80% of his campaign contributions come from outside the ward, and he said it was because he can't raise enough money inside. . . Check the campaign contribution records -- Joe represents North Shore real estate dealers and contractors. That's without getting into the lying ACORN fliers his buddies at SEIU/ACORN (it's one office) stonewall and lie about.
