Cashing in

Posted by Mick Dumke on Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 12:55 PM

Campaign finance reports were due to the Illinois State Board of Elections yesterday. Among the millions of dollars in interesting contributions to the six reform-pledging candidates for state's attorney (yes, some of us are obsessed with this race, but it is kind of important):

* Bob Milan: $150,000 loans from both the Beverly Bank & Trust Company and himself; $10,000 from Dick Devine; $5,000 from former U.S. Senate candidate Blair Hull; $300 from former judge Edward Egan, author of the roundly criticized report on police torture under Jon Burge

* Anita Alvarez: $600,000 loan from her husband, Dr. James Gomez

* Howard Brookins Jr.: $12,500 from developer and Mayor Daley friend Elzie Higginbottom; $5,000 from Congressman Bobby Rush; $500 from convicted former alderman Percy Giles; $500 from Todd Stroger's Eighth Ward organization

* Larry Suffredin: About $30,000 from the Service Employees International Union; $25,000 from former state senator Carol Ronen; $1,500 from Heather Steans, the state senate candidate Ronen endorsed/handpicked to succeed her

* Tommy Brewer: $27,000 in loans from himself

* Tom Allen: $3,500 from lobbyist and former mayoral aide Terry Teele; gazillions from various carpenters, boilermakers, and other unions; $5,500 from Gene's Sausage Shop on West Belmont

So whats your point little Mick ? People give money. Campaigns cost money. Do you want publicly financed elections ? Go to England.

Milan + Devine + Egan = Coverup Artists for Daley. Bad, Bobby, bad, bad, bad. Bobby's a BAAAAAAAAAAAAD boy. Hmmmmm. Howie plays for the 'right' team, don't he? That's some heavy duty playas he's got toting his baggage - Daley, Rush, Stroger, etc., all these names sound vaguely fami-liar, as in a family of liars. Way to go, Howard. Uht ohhhhhh! Larry's got himself some rich friends, looking to get themselves a little insider assistance, aka protection insurance, juuuuuuust in case they might, in the future, need a sympathetic ear, to avoid all those pesky, expensive legal entanglements which may arise, should there be, for the first time in living memory, an honest prosecuting attorney, here, in Crook County. What's Carol been up to, retiring so 'suddenly', and attempting to hand her elected office over to her wealthy pals' little tulip? And Tommy Allen. Alderman Tommy Allen. Gazillions, huh? That sounds like a lot of money. I wonder how much of that Tommy will be pocketing, after he loses this 'race'? And, was that the plan all along? As for Anita, well, I do hope she works well with others, not that she hasn't proven that already, having so much access to the knowledge that, were she a truly honest individual, could have come in handy to Fitzgerald, were she to avail herself of the protections of the various Whistleblower legislations. But that would take guts, and a commitment to honest government. I wonder how the machine is going to reimburse Mister Brewer? For being a good and loyal trooper, putting himself up as their shill, black candidate, just like Brown and Walls were? Shilling to ensure that those black voters, who don't cotton to Brookins, won't give their votes to no white man. Yep, it's tough, even for the expert tricksters of the Crook County Democratic Machine, to conceal the natures of so many sow's ears. But they try, yes, indeed, they try. Crook County State's Attorney. Is it possible that the Crook County Democratic Machine also thinks this is a very important office?

So it looks like the non-elected officials in the race are substantially self financing, while the professional politicians are tapping organized labor and special interest groups. I am surprsed that nobody is reporting on the help that Allen is getting from the former vote fraud felon Coalition for Better Government group, and the Governor under the radar as well. I suspect thatgiven the track record, and the recent poll numbers, those are two endorsements he has chosen to leave off his web page. I can't say that I blame him. When Larry Suffredin loses this race; how many addtional "conflicts of interest" have been created by this campaign which wll have him ducking for cover on County Board votes? If he takes a duck on too many more votes, Stroger may actually end up taking more votes than Larry does, and he only gets to vote in case of a tie. The big question is; what is the over/under on how much of the $600K Dr. Gomez will actually allow to be spent? Will it make any difference at all?

".....while the professional politicians are tapping organized labor and special interest groups." You forgot to mention the financial support they're receiving from incumbent office holders, directly or, more commonly, indirectly, unless you included them in the category of "...special interest groups.". The biggest question is: Will enough citizens see the immense potential in Peraica, regardless of his being a Repulsive Republican, for the aggressive and passionate investigation, indictment, and prosecution of the many criminals currently conducting their criminal enterprises within Crook County, under cover of the Democratic Machine controlled State's Attorney's office?

Now, aren't you the pot calling the kettle black. What would you be spouting, were it not for the events of 9-11? Something dependably ignorant and vile, no doubt. 'Cause that's the kind of munchkin you are. You might want to stock up on 'adult' diapers, you can peddle them, to all your fellow munchkins, 'cause, if Peraica gets in, they'll be shitting and pissing all over themselves more than they usually do. And you'll need some source of income, to supplement the overly generous, but still hopefully meager, unemployment comp you'll be getting. And, as you seem to have deliberately forgotten, it's not Christ we need as our County State's Attorney, quite the opposite, as far as the Democratic Machine will be concerned with. Lay waste to the thieves and rascals, Tony, bring new meaning to the phrase 'What goes around, comes around'. Oh, and was that a Freudian slip you made, ie., ".... get down on this prick extrodinaire."? Seems like you've got a not so secret anymore crush on Tony. I trust he's not interested.

I admire Alvarez for putting her own money into this. It doesn't look like she is going to owe anyone anything if and when she is elected State's Attorney. That's refreshing. I would say the same about Milan but he seems bought and paid for by Devine.

It should be noted that these D-2 reports do not include any money donated after December 31. So if any of Larry Suffredin's past or present clients (such as the gaming or tobacco indrustries, both of whom have used Suffredin as a lobbyist) gave Suffredin the big bucks he needed for those YV commercials of his, it would not qappear on this report.

" 'gazillions' from various carpenters, boilermakers, and other unions" Mick, can you find gazillions in the dictionary for us ? Exactly how many zeros are in a gazillion ? Is this a term you encourage your Columbia College students to use ? One you learned at Matchbook Cover U ? Or just a red-herring to try to sling mud ?

I was surprised to read that Ms. Steans publicly denied the 750K spending figure. Looks like the Pioneer reporter only checked with the State Board of Elections. The State Board of Elections only monitors contributions on state and local candidates and committees. I also think she missed the PAC money and only looked at individual contributions. If you check out the Federal Election Commission or the sites that report its data (like opensecrets.org) you will find 179K+ of contributions from Heather Steans that are NOT included in the Illinois State Board of Elections disclosures. I'm attaching a LIST. This list is interesting for 4 reasons. First, it adds nearly $180K more to the total spread around. Which I think is over $1Million in Illinois state campaign contributions. Which makes the denial of the 750 K even more of a lie. Second -- And this is a separate story, it gives a chronology of Steans's actual occupation -- required for federal contributions but not for state ones -- that does not quite match the picture of "professional policy analyst." It looks like Ms. Steans's last fulltime job was at least 7 years, maybe a decade ago. Her "public school" experience the Trib touts was over a decade ago. Most years since she variously lists herself as unemployed, a homemaker, "occupation/employer" being "n/a", or, in candor, saying she is a volunteer on boards. Or, on good self-esteem days, a "philanthropist." And we all know what "consultant" means LOL. So, assuming she was honest when she filled out the forms you have to fill out when you make a federal contribution, she has been an unemployed homemaker since Bill Clinton left the White House. I have nothing against homemakers, my mom was one. But my moms doesn't claim to be some economics and policy expert. All I'm say is it's not quite the fairytale her literature or the Tribune endorsement weaves. Third -- Weird how sometimes in a span of a few months, sometimes even a few days, she lists different employers/occupations. Sends one check, says one thing, then a little later, another check, says another. Trying to make a trail harder to follow? Or just the fault of the recordkeeping of the recipient committee. It sorta looks like once a committee has you listed one way they tend to draw on that past data. The employment history is also interesting when you match up the entries to the time period on the Illinois State Board of Elections sites where Leo Smith lists his position, for years, as a lobbyist or director of the Birth-to-5 PAC. But the PAC pays him no salary. So.... Heather didn't work. And Leo didn't bring home a paycheck. In fact, he was a major funder of the PAC. How do you do that when you have no income? To be fair, some of the PAC money was originally Irving Harris's as well. # 4 -- What is interesting is how these folks divvy up the campaign $$. Heather gives the high visibility federal bucks to good liberals. She has Leo (they have a joint checking account she admits) do most of the giving to state candidates, but again mainly Dems. When they want to give to Republicans on the downlow they use the PAC. It's a pretty clear division. Basically, it looks like neither of these folks have held what most folks would consider a real job in years. The only apparent source of income is Heather's family money (I hear Leo comes from a very middle-class background). So life consists of going to board meetings and political fundraisers and having people fawn over you for writing checks that to them are big money but to you are chump change (except for the half-mil WBEZ donation, which is not a political contriution but probably more important than all the others combined, because it buys one's way into the hearts and minds of the media establishment and the liberals). Nice work, if you can get it! I am not saying being rich is not legit. Better they not work than take away a job from someone who needs it. And on the one hand, if you have the money and to choose to devote your time to pro bono activities, that's extremely cool. Our nonprofits depend on people like Steans doing that. But don't try and parlay that into some kind of amazing "professional background." But, if "to whom much is given, much is expected" has any meaning, at most Steans has done what is expected. She has had nothing but free time the entire time Bush has been President. If she is such a policy godsend, and so devoted to the community, I'd like to see one paper she's published, one speech delivered outside a crowd of the well-heeled, one single letter to the editor on any issue. Anything that challenges the current system or power structure. Some might say it looks more like a decade of resume-padding and high-end palm-greasing, and a well-planned, long-incubated project. Best of luck to you. A friend

So that's how Bernie stole this particular election. It was amusing to see Stone complain about the 'invasion of privacy' issue, as in his protestations against anyone asking anyone who they voted for and what, if any, efforts or actions were brought to bear that 'influenced' their votes. How else does one determine if illegal vote frauds were committed, if not by investigating, as in asking relevant questions? But Bernie knows all this, his objections and allegations are the stuff made of crocodile tears. As phony a baloney as you'll find, though we are cursed with a substantial number of phony baloneys.
