For years Mayor Daley made it a practice to avoid giving endorsements in hotly contested Democratic primaries. Though he might offer advice, encouragement, or even a few foot soldiers here and there, he officially refrained from declaring his preferences when members of his own party were battling one another for ballot spots.
This year, though, the mayor is lending his name to several campaigns. Daley endorsed Barack Obama for president more than a year ago, and the other day he even worked the phones on Obama's behalf. But last month he waded into a much-lower-profile county race by backing 28th Ward alderman Ed Smith, a frequent City Council foe, for Cook County Recorder of Deeds.
Incumbent recorder Gene Moore, who's held the office since 1999, wasn't very happy to hear the news. He says Daley pledged to support him last fall, then backed out. "He called me at [my] office," Moore says. "I went to his office, because I'd never been to his office. I was elated that the mayor called. And he told me he was supporting me." Moore says he subsequently heard that Daley had decided to throw his weight behind Smith in return for the alderman's vote for the mayor's budget and property tax hikes. Smith says he voted for the most recent budget -- as he's voted for Daley's other budgets--because it included funding for a range of programs that needy residents in his ward rely on.
Now the mayor's tapped another candidate. Earlier today Will Burns, a candidate for state rep in the 26th district, announced that he'd won Daley's endorsement. Burns, a former aide to state senate president Emil Jones, said he sat down with the mayor in December to tell him about his goals of working on gun control, education funding reform, and health care coverage, and Daley agreed to back him. (A call to the mayor's press office wasn't returned.)
Burns -- who's running against incumbent Elga Jeffries and challengers Kenny Johnson, Phillip Jackson, and Paul Chadha -- once worked in Obama's state senate office. Like the presidential candidate, he's promising to bring fresh energy to the political process.
That message is arguably an awkward fit with an endorsement from the face of the Democratic machine. Of course, Obama's trying to pull off the same thing. And when Burns was asked about it, he alluded to his ally Toni Preckwinkle, alderman of the Fourth Ward: "I also have the leader of the progressive caucus in the council backing me. I think that points to the fact that I'm able to build a big tent." Only people able to build coalitions and collaborations can get anything done, Burns argued.
He added: "This campaign is about change."

Watch for Melma Old Gringo Dickie Mell and Richard Bradley to play a racist move and try to stop and destroy Hispanic political empowerment.
Chuck, Why is it racist when you hispanics have a opponent. When you had the chances to get Alderman Mell, he bought your people out , CHEAP! The same with the African Americans, Daley has been buying you out for lunch money. When you finally get a strong Mayoral Candidate, it will be to late. The Irish outfit destroyed your majority Chicago vote. The endorsement of Indo Ed Smith was another worker put on the Daley Plantation.
I knew Obama was bought when he endorsed Stroger. That was stupid and it made me question what other stupid things he's capable of. It is clear to me he now does not have the needed experience to do the job. Daley shot himself in the foot if Clinton gets elected, Because I would love to see da mayor make an idiot of himself, I might end up voting for Clinton given there really isn't that much difference from the two of them anyways.
Chicago politics is an accurate microcosm of national politics, though some would say not so micro in size. Do you think Bushy boy didn't cut these kind of deals in Texas, and everywhere else he could, (can we say Florida)? Obama is the Democratic candidate the Republicans are hoping for, as he's got all the easy to exploit, distort and pander to 'negatives' that they know will 'resonate' in the 'minds' of their party's faithful. The Republicans will use the following 'issues' against Obama: 1 - Oh my God, he's BLAAAAAAACK!!!! 2 - He ain't no REAL Christian, he's a fucking Muslim RADICAL!!!! 3 - He's Daley's nigger. 4 - We can't let these young folks run OUR country, they don't know nuthin' about the REAL world. 5 - If he's like John Kennedy, we 'conservatives' didn't like what he did either. That's why we had him whacked. Ask your great grandfather, he'll tell you. 6 - When you ain't got nothing truthfully bad to say about Obama, make something up. 7 - Remember Willie Horton. Before It's Too Late. Obama knows he'll need every aspect of the political universe to win, including doing some things the old fashioned way. Daley's done what his father did, put all his chips on the candidate with charisma. He figures it's a good bet, with a huge return, if his horse comes in. Time will tell.
Obama is all about change and then he does something the old fashioned way; he endorses Stroger and the Mayor. I'm not so sure now he's really about change. That sounds more status quo to me.
Voting for Barrack Osama is like voting for corruption.
Our political system is what it is, for now. Will Obama, should he be nominated by the Democratic Party as their candidate for President of these United States of America and, should he be elected, actually be able to 'change' the political system? In ways that improve it? In one sense, his candidacy has already stimulated change, as in the apparent increase in the registration to vote of college age citizens and the increased interest in our political/governmental systems he's effected in those citizens not yet of age to vote. This, in and of itself, is a significant change in the status quo, that status quo being the widespread apathy and cynicism, concerning politics, felt by many citizens, the consequences of which we, here in Crook County and the City That Works (for crooks), are all too familiar with. Determined and thoughtful participation is essential to Authentic Democracy. Nothing, and I mean nothing, ever functions properly without sufficient care and maintenance. Sufficient care and maintenance requires knowledge, understanding and willingness to do the work required. I'm reminded of the time one of my sisters came to me, requesting that I help her get her car running, hearing her say that she didn't understand why it wouldn't start, it had always started during the time she'd owned it, some 4+ years. I asked her how often she'd had it serviced, to which she replied that she never had, as why would she pay to have something fixed that wasn't broken. As long as it kept starting, to her, nothing else needed to be done but drive it. Needless to say, it took a lot of work, parts and dinero to get it running again. Had she had any interest in understanding her car, beyond knowing how to get it to start and driving it, well, you get the idea. Our general attitudes towards our governments, and those we elect to 'run' them, are similarly bereft of knowledge, understanding and the willingness to do the work required. That must change, for us to, as a country, become the dream of Free Democracy our forefathers envisioned, created, fought for, died for and hoped to achieve. Will we ever be up to the task?
In Chicago it's been an Obama fest, including with the Trib, Sun-Times, and yes, the Reader, giving special attention and press coverage. Chicago does not represent the entire U.S. I'm not so sure we owe thanks to Obama for more young voters. I think it's been the wonderful alternatives out there for the Democratic Party. I still believe Obama sold out his intergrity when he endorsed Stroger. If he sold it out there, where else will he do it? I'm fine with him being the President, but I'm also fine with Clinton and Edwards. I do get turned off by politicians who jump on the bandwagon of any candidate with the hopes of being in favor later down the line. It's that mentality that has really made the Chicago machine what it is today: CORRUPT. I'll go with the candidate who displays the most integrity and ability to work with other state, national, and international leaders of the world.
"I'll go with the candidate who displays the most integrity and ability to work with other state, national, and international leaders of the world." Now, if only more Democrats, and Republicans, and every other citizen would pay attention, we might actually have a chance at being who are forefathers hoped we would be. We have to lead ourselves, to no longer be led around, like so many cattle.
Hillary is going to win the nomination. Edwards will be her running mate to get her over in the South. As President, in order to fend off an Obama challenge in 2012, she will appoint him to the US Supreme Court or Attorney General post - sort of the same way Daley gets rid of pesky aldermen. If they are lawyers he supports their appointments as Circuit Court judges (Steele, Murphy, etc....)
GREAT, THE MONITOR CAN GO BACK TO THE HOLE SHE CRAWLED FROM UNDER ! Judge allows City Hall official to oversee hiring system By Laurie Cohen Tribune reporter 4:06 PM CST, January 18, 2008 In a victory for Mayor Richard Daley's administration, a federal judge Friday approved a plan to allow a City Hall officialâinstead of the independent inspector generalâto oversee the city's scandal-plagued hiring system. U.S. District Judge Wayne Andersen acknowledged that critics have questioned whether the Daley administration ever will keep politics free from hiring after years of abuses. But he said the city's plan contains "important safeguards" to make sure jobs aren't awarded based on political considerations. "The city will be given an opportunity to show that the skepticism is ill-founded," Andersen wrote. The plan he approved puts oversight of hiring in the city's newly created Office of Compliance. The judge modified the city's plan slightly to require that the official who supervises compliance with hiring policies not be a current or former city employee and not have any connections to Chicago politics. Critics, including court-appointed hiring monitor Noelle Brennan, had pushed for Inspector General David Hoffman to handle the job. Hoffman, a former federal prosecutor, is widely considered to be immune to political pressures at City Hall.
"The city will be given an opportunity to show that the skepticism is ill-founded," Andersen wrote. I give Daley a month or two to fuck up his golden opportunity and lose control over hiring again.
shew just in time to help with rounding up election day volunteers put in a day in Feb, get a job in March
a month? Try last week. Wayne Andersen is a political hack. If US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald doesn't get off his skinney little Irish Ass, nothing will change. The mayors son robs taxpayers money under the guise of MSS sewer cleaning, I show the feds how he did it. Than the IG ask for the records they need to show the scam by the Mayors son. What happens , Jenny Hoyle says you can't have the records! Geez....do you think a red flag should go up with US Attorney Fitzgerald? I guess you have to be Italian to get his attention.
Mick, make sure mandatory drug testing is available for all persons posting. Jennifer Hoyle is very honest. She just had a child. What kind of a demon monster would pick on a new mommy? Back on the period.
I am voting for Fitzgerald. He does not touch his children in the wrong manner.
Jenny Hoyle is a hot red-head. I wonder does the carpet match the drapes ?
Like you'll ever get a chance to know.
Lynn Sweet, Who would most likely jerkoff in a simulated video of "The Name Game" with the name Obama. LET'S DO OBAMA, OBAMA BAMA BO BAMA BANANA NANA FO FBAMA FEE FI FO MAMA OBAMA. In a REPETITIVE manner, As was done with that one hypnotic e-video. That MAD SLUT!!!!.
Can you imagine what this poser, I mean poster, would be putting up, were the variety of 'drugs' he/she is using were to be completely, (legally) accessible? Talk about dope bringing out the worst in some people.....
Is that the media is whoring for Obama, To the point of deitism.
"To the point of deitism."? Is that even a word? What 'he/she' is saying is that everybody's a moron, except he/she. What 'he/she' is saying is that anybody who likes Obama is an idiot, by his/her definition of same. What 'he/she' is saying is that he/she would be overjoyed if the Bush/Cheney criminal organization could continue it's reign. What he/she is saying is no different than the most extreme rantings of those he/she is the most critical of. What he/she is saying is that he/she doesn't believe in Democracy, unless, of course, the implementation of democracy results in the empowerment of those he/she is in agreement with. The media will always act as a substantial whore, just as those whose closed minds will always act as whores for those whose agendas are agreeable to said closed minded individuals. Democracy is not for the timid, nor for the greedy, nor for the narrow-minded, nor for any who value only their own freedom, and have no respect for the freedoms of those others who do not think as they do. Though he/she may try to say whatever he/she chooses, the essential beliefs of he/she are clear.
STFU, You Lynn Sweet spinster.
Try to get a grip, on something other than your privates. You're embarrassing yourself.
Like what YOU & that Obama whore Lynn Sweet does?.
Lynn Sweet is MUCH MORE of one than Obama, HA HA!!!!.
Lynn Sweet & Bob Novak, The unofficial Obama wanks suck too!!!.
