Sam Zell at the LA Times

Posted by Whet Moser on Tue, Aug 28, 2007 at 12:57 PM

Because there's nothing sexier than newspaper gossip.

Mickey Kaus (emphasis his) gets some red meat from Sam Zell's recent meeting at the Los Angeles Times: "[Kaus Files] hears Zell was rather more critical than that. In his talk to the assembled staffers, he said he found the paper 'pretty bland.' He pissed on the business section. He ran down the importance of foreign coverage as opposed to local news. Asked whether front-page ads compromised the integrity of the paper, he called that idea a 'crock of shit.' He made a big point of saying the paper had to print what readers wanted to read, not what LAT editors wanted them to read. . . ."

Fantastic. More critical than what? you may be asking. More critical than this engagingly banal memo by Times publisher David Hiller.

"High energy straight-talking business owner looking for same in us"

"He doesn’t associate with mediocrity, so wants to 'go for greatness'"

"Focus, focus on our customers"

"'I can't do it' has to be eliminated from our vocabulary"

"Meanwhile, what can we do? Keep driving revenue to show improvement in the remainder of the year, and push ahead with our Times Change efforts with the urgency Sam displays."

Joanna, we need to talk about your flair.

I sent a note to Mr. Sam Zell: I've been on the air in Chicago since 1970 (WMAQ-AM / 13 years and US99 for 15 years) and others for a total of 39 years. My partner and I have been in contact with WGN Radio to promote a new concept in talk radio. Radio is having troublew seeking out new ideas ... and Baby Boomer's have been left in the dust. As veteran broadcasters (with over 75 years of combined broadcast experience, we have tested a format that works. “Now and Then Talk Radio” is designed, by radio broadcasters - who have the experience and respect for the broadcast industry that such a program requires. The program hosts for this show are two Chicago radio veterans Rich Renik and Denny Farrell who grew up in the city and have firsthand experience of life in and around the Chicago-land market. If you're looking for something to broadcast that's just good ol' fun . . . make it: Now and Then Talk Radio out of Chicago. Now and Then Talk Radio is a springboard for BABY BOOMERS, just imagine: a talk show that actually listens to the listeners and makes them the stars of the show. We promise not to insult your or their intelligence. Remember, everyone has a story and we are listening. Please pass consider giving us th chance to promote this idea personally to the leadership team of WGN. Tom Langmayer, Bob Shomber and Kurt Vanderaugh have been sent the demo. Thank you for your willingness to hear our story! And by the way, I ride a Gold Wing! Warmest regards, Rich Renik and Denny Farrell Email: rabrenik@prodigy.net Denny@TheVoiceBank.com

I would like to thank all of the wonderful people who have emailed Rich and I to wish us the best. Yes you are right, Chicago radio is in need of a program that is designed for the Baby Boomers. We have come up with just the right program that would hit the spot. It's called, "Now And Then Talk Radio" Being a babyboomer myself,I have been on the radio in the Chicago market for almost 37 years now. From Music Director to Program director, Announcer/host...you might say, we have grown up with you. What better then two Chicago originals to talk about Chicago and all the great people. I'm looking forward to seeing you all again. Best Regards, Hall Of Fame Inductee, Denny Farrell

I think this is a GREAT idea for a radio talk show! The amount of subjects to talk about would be endless! 2 people with your experience in Radio Broadcasting would be a FANTASTIC addition and asset to our GREAT Chicagoland Area! I hope to hear this new talk show on WGN being announced in the very near future! Sincerely, Debi Donohoe

I sing the Big Band music with a 10 piece orchestra. A program featuring the "then" music in contrast to the "now" would be wonderful. Please check my website www.LuciDMari.com All my music can be downloaded free. Good luck in this endeavor. Luci D'Mari

Just want to say that I've been listening to Danny Farrell and his fantastic Big Band progam for many years. There's nothing like his show and it would be awesome having Denny and Rich Renik host a talk show about music in the Chicago area. There is truly no program out there that people like me can connect with. Looking forward to hearing them on your radio station. My very best wishes, Rachel Gies
