Bananas for Gordon

Posted by Ben Joravsky on Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 3:04 PM

There's a new source of controversy in the contentious 49th Ward aldermanic election.

Several Rogers Park residents are upset at aldermanic candidate Don Gordon for handing out bananas to commuters at el stations. They think Gordon, who's challenging alderman Joe Moore in the April 17 runoff, is sending a not-so-subliminal message designed to play on the "Juneway Jungle" nickname folks use for Juneway Terrace, the economically depressed and racially mixed community just north of Howard Street.

"I was very offended--I think it's a terribly racist joke," says Brenda Dunkins, who lives north of Howard. "I told Don Gordon this too when I saw him. I told he had a lot of nerve handing out these bananas."

According to Gordon, Dunkins and others are making a big deal out of nothing. He says he decided to hand out bananas as a healthy alternative to the doughnuts that Moore traditionally passes out to election judges on election day. "Yes, right, I'm a longtime racist--my parents are racists," says Gordon, speaking sarcastically. "Give me a break. This just shows you how desperate the Moore campaign is that they're making an issue out of this." (For the record, Dunkins, who says she plans to vote for Moore, supported Jim Ginderske in the February 27 election.)

As Gordon points out, he gives voters a plastic bag filled with a banana, two Hershey's Kisses, and a flyer that reads, "Go bananas for Don Gordon, kiss your current alderman good-bye."

Gordon says that some of his advisers recommended that he stop handing out bananas after they heard complaints from residents. "I said, 'I'm not going to let Moore spin this against us,'" says Gordon. "We did this with the best intentions. I love bananas--they're full of potassium. They taste delicious and they're good for you. I've been eating bananas all of my life. Bananas are yellow and that's the color of our campaign. So I'm sticking with this."

What comes next, from the idiots-for-Moore, charges that Don handing out fruit is a swipe at our gay fellow citizens? Maybe Don should add apples, oranges, nectarines, mangoes, papayas, plums, cherries, pears, grapes, blueberries, blackberries, mulberries, raspberries, kiwis, strawberries, figs, guavas, persimmons, tangerines, ......... to his handouts. THAT would then present a challenge to his 'critics', which fruit to condemn him for? Uh, and to Brenda, I wonder who's banana you're eating?

The TIF advisory board was ALL WHITE. That is the Moore racism--don't worry about bananas. How about the hypocritcal whistle blower ordinance--name one whistle blower it has helped? The crime and lack of retail in the 49th ward are the real issues. The racism charge is low and stupid. Talk about racism--isn't racist little dirty trickster Alex Armor the campaign manager for Joe Moore?

Thanks, Francis, for succinctly pointing out the absurdity of Moore's supporters' half-assed criticisms of a non-issue. The closer we get to the run-off election, the 'moore' desperate, dirty and ridiculous will be the mud that Moore will sling.

Moore panders to the poor black community with lots of promises he never keeps. They vote then complain when they're snubbed with no jobs and a few thousand less apartments thanks to Moore's developer pals. Ms. Dunkins has a very short term memory if she plans to vote for the man she claimed 'we have to get rid of' just a few months and weeks ago. How big was the payoff?

I think this reaction explains exactly why Don Gordon should never be Alderman. Let me be clear -- I am not condemning Gordon for coming up with the Banana Plan. After all, I, like Mr. Gordon, am a middle-class white guy who's never experienced any real predjudice in his life, so if I'd been in his shoes, I might have made the same mistake. I mean, -I- like bananas. They're yummy and inexpensive. However, when I heard and saw my African-American freinds' reaction to (for want of a better word) banana-gate, I could see immediately that this undoubtedly well-meaning campaign tactic was a horrible mistake. This isn't some meaningless charge cooked up by Joe Moore. Bananas have an offensive connotation to African-Americans for reasons that should be evident with a little thought. Not Confederate-flag offensive, but close. This has been explained to me, and it seems it has been explained to Mr. Gordon as well, repeatedely. If Mr. Gordon had come out and said "Whoa, my bad guys. That seriously didn't come out like it was supposed to. Really sorry." and withdrawn the offending fruits, then that would be the end of the story. But Gordon's stay-the-course persistance in the face of repeated objections means is is at best willfully ignorant and at worst haughtily dismissive of minority sensibilities. Quite simply, he is unable to represent the citizens of the 49th Ward. I'm voting for Moore.

As a self-proclaimed "middle-class white guy who's never experienced any real prejudice in his life", it's puzzling why you find it acceptable for your "African-American friends" to feel offended at something that is, in no way, offensive. Period. If your black friends wish to play their own version of the race card, that's their freedom, but to think that anyone could be honestly offended by the distributing of a piece of fruit is beyond ludicrous, it's downright dishonest. If your black friends believe that Moore's history as alderman has served their interests well, than they'll vote for him. If they truly believe that Moore, or any of his supporters and associates, like slumlord Jay Johnson, give a flying fuck about their interests, then they're under-informed. You want to vote for Moore, fine, just don't insult our intelligence or the intelligence of your black friends by claiming that you will do so because of this nonsense. If you vote for Moore, it will be because of reasons having NOTHING to do with your being 'sensitive' to your black friends' feelings or about anyone else being 'insensitive' to same.

- The Moore imports would have created a racial offense if Gordon handed out green mints - but JoeMoore's chocolate donuts filled with jelly are OK. Your weak stab indicates your lack of political knowledge of Joe's race game. Had Don backed down, this ignorant rant would probably continue as a sign of 'weakness'. Nice try at detouring around the fact that Moore is not really a friend of the African American community or he would do more than hand out frozen fowls and have a huge political picnic pretending it's for the kids. There are many African Americans who are fed up with Joe's lies.

To "re:" "it's puzzling why you find it acceptable for your "African-American friends" to feel offended at something that is, in no way, offensive. Period." Who the heck are you to decide what is or is not offensive to other people? Are you a mind reader? Some people turned out to be offended, so it is, by definition, offensive. Period. Candor: If your neighbor asks you to stop playing your Dance Hits of the 80s so loud, is it "weakness" to turn the bass down, or get some headphones? Like I said, I'm not accusing Gordon on racism, just sheer thickheadedness. He gains no benefit from passing out bananas instead of, say, oranges, and it's clearly upsetting a lot of people. His refusal to back down over this doesn't make him a bad person, but it makes him an utterly inept -representative-. (BTW, those friends of mine don't all live in the 49th, or know who Don Gordon is. So don't chalk this up to some JoMo voodoo mind control.)

It's interesting that you choose to quote only that small portion of my post that has nothing to do with the long history of Moore's close associations with slum landlords and that you focus only on this non-issue created and incited by Moore's political hit-squads. Would you consider Moore to be 'thickheaded' for consistently ignoring those residents most in need of his 'public service', those without the means to 'grease his palm', like slumlord Jay 'the Torch' Johnson? Apparently the possibility that black people ever play the race card, as in claiming to be offended purely for the purpose of gaining an advantage, is beyond your consideration. And the possibility that the WHITE Moore is using these so-called 'offended African-Americans' to attempt to retain HIS lucrative position doesn't enter your mind? I'll bet if you were to ask any of the black residents of the ward what they would prefer, an alderman who passed out bananas during his campaign and DIDN'T take pay-offs from slum landlords or an alderman who passed out donuts during his campaign and, who has not only BEEN allowing slum landlords to flourish, but will CONTINUE to do so, which one would they choose? Only those blacks who are working for the Moore's of this world would choose the latter. Do you and Moore's hit squad REALLY think that the black residents of the ward are that stupid? That they're not aware of what Moore's been up to throughout his time as alderman? What contempt Moore and his minions must have, for those struggling to make ends meet, to blatantly attempt to stir up this kind of phony racial conflict.

The fact that he was handing out this note with the controversial fruit clearly indicates that he had no racist intentions. Saying "Go oranges for Don Gordon" just doesn't have the same effect. "Go bananas for Don Gordon, kiss your current alderman good-bye." Either people are too sensitive or they are trying to make Don a racist for political gain. I don't live in the 49th & don't really care who wins.

I think R.P.R. nailed it, though. The issue isn't only whether handing out bananas is racist. It's also whether Gordon can gracefully recover from a gaffe -- even if the gaffe is something that no reasonable person would have made a big deal of. And no, I don't think any reasonable person would have made a big deal of the bananas, but then again, I meet no small number of unreasonable people every day, and they vote, too.

I am voting for Joe this time around. I was on Jonquil the other day when Gordon tried to get into the North Point buildings, Toni Duncan was shouting to a resident of the building. She was saying that if "you people" would stop having babies, we wouldn't need a special education department. Gordon just sat around. Why wouldn't settle that woman down, and appologize the people around. Also, why would he keep her around him. If that were me I would ask her to take her sign down from her window. If you all check out the Gordon supporters blog you repeatedly find racist comments. In one blog I was shocked to see that someone had hateful comments to say about the children that died last year in the fire. The blog talked about how like a forest we need a fire to every once and while cleanse the ourselves.

I commend those who are pointing it out and bring issues to light. Just because the civil rights movement is over doesn't mean that don't need to continue to work and make progress toward equality. Seriously consider who are your friends, how many of them are not your economical background, color, size. Now exclude the people you work with or for. Notice any difference? Now, ask EVERY possible question as to WHY these two statements are substantially true. Ask EVERY possible question that the tentative answers to the above questions raise and see if the complicated truth begins to appear. I await your observations and discoveries. :)

49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore is a grandstanding buffoon. He championed the Big Box ordinance knowing that doing so would garner him national media attention just as he did with his advocacy on the part of French geese. But yet he is totally unconcerned with the plight of the poor. Tom Westgard, a lawyer in the 49th Ward and someone who is in no way connected with Don Gordon, documented how Joe Moore was using people from a prison release center to collect signatures for his ballot petitions. These people were forced to work without pay. One woman had to stand in the cold on a chilly November day even though she did not own a coat. One person had to miss a job interview to collect signatures for Moore. Our Alderman certainly has the funds to pay ballot signature collectors. He spent thousands of dollars running televised campaign ads on multiple stations in one of the most expensive media markets in the country. Joe Moore should have paid his signature collectors a living wage before he ran televised campaign ads that will reach hundreds of thousands of people, most of whom cannot vote for Joe Moore. After reading Tom Westgard's letter I don't see how anyone can vote for Joe Moore with a clean conscience. Joe Moore is clearly desperate for attention. The man has me so angry that I am beginning to think that this attention should come in the form of being tarred, feathered and run out of town on a rail.

"oe Moore is clearly desperate for attention. The man has me so angry that I am beginning to think that this attention should come in the form of being tarred, feathered and run out of town on a rail." The FIRST step is to vote his ass out of office. Whatever comes after is in the hands of his 'supporters'......

Have you not heard of the Juneway Jungle? Have you not heard that black people have been called monkey? What do monkeys eat? Good thing he didn't show up in black face, because I am sure you all would find a reason why it was not offensive.

Juneway has been called a jungle long before Gordon. There are more than monkey's in a jungle that eat bananas. Try again fool. Moore is playing the blacks for suckers. Who's sucking?

We came to Rogers Park in the 1970's. My father, my mother, myself and my younger sister. We rented a small apartment as first time immigrants seeking better life. We literally came here with nothing but our clothes. I started 2nd grade at Field school and my sister 1st grade. It is now 2007 - I still live here. In fact I purchased the building that we used to rent from. I chose to live here after my work/world travels (England, France, Germany, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, China) as well as the east coast and west coast. Why you ask? Where the heart is the home is. Rogers Park was a vibrant wondeful neighborhood as I rememeer it 1970 and such a hell hole in the late 80 and early 90's then. When a very strange professor named ORR from Loyola won the aldermanic elections. He was out in the snow asking for my vote. ORR said he would change the neighborhood even better and so I believed him and our family voted for him - all 4 of us. That was the biggest mistake on our part. ORR decided to build his feeble constituent base by bringing in drug dealers, petty criminals, their families, and started a contoversial housing projects relocation to rogers park citing he [ORR] was a nobel-prize humanitarian. ORR has not won the nobel-prize I would like to point out. In fact, he as moved on to other minor political positions just as Moore attempted but failed. The aftermath of ORR administration was that Rogers Park was unable to recover from the horrible deterioration. Let's be honest - we are not trying to blame race, or anything inhuman here. The fact is that ORR attempted to broaden his voting base by bringing in anybody he could. There is nothing wrong in that but why the criminials, the sexual offenders, the drug dealers, and all the scummy landlords which ORR secretly brokered deals with. My apologies to good landlords and building owners of which I am one one now also. Let me give you an example of how corrupt Joe Moore has become. I once asked the proprietor of Hearland Cafe to please turn down his loud music bands and the noise. His reply was that alderman Joe Moore has allowed him a zoning position and that he was buddy-buddy with him and since I was a mere renter with no political clout - the proprietor told me to turn up the airconditioner (i could not afford on at the time as i was a working student in college) and suffer the noise! The arrongant son-of--**** so this is how chicago politics is for an average hardworking person!! My family escaped policeman beating up innocent citizens, war, hunger, lack of jobs, lack of education to finally come to America so that we can become 2nd class citizens again! What I suffered was nothing compared to the evil things Joe Moore conspired with money-hungry lawyers. Joe - I spare you this embarassement since it looks like you will lose this election to Gordon. Mr. Gordon please be fair after you have won the election. You legacy as a human being will be how you behave while your in power - please do not become another ORR or JOE MOORE - lest you also face dedeat your 2nd term. Thank you for reading my comments.

Thank YOU for posting them, so refreshing, after all the political hack spamming. Comments such as yours are what a true public forum is all about. The sharing of ideas, opinions and viewpoints, honestly and intelligently expressed, is what we, the citizens, need, to be able to understand the reasons, methods and means which our government 'leaders' routinely have employed to fleece us out of our hard-earned incomes. Intelligent, thoughtful discourse can help all citizens realize that the various schemes practiced by these rascals, corrupted by political/economic power are, indeed, very harmful to the well being and day-to-day living conditions of us all. There is hope that the day will come when the majority of those elected to represent the citizen's best interests will truly be honest individuals. All that is required is the determined participation of honest citizens. This comment board, generously provided by the Chicago Reader, and enthusiastically managed by Ben and his crew of truth seekers, can be, and has been, an important element in facilitating the exchange of ideas, information and understanding. Thank you all for taking the time to engage. Please continue to do so, as I'm sure that our 'truth-seekers' have many more truths to share with us.

Who wants to bet that, should Moore squeak by and 'win' this one, that there'll be a lot of interest in the likelihood of vote fraud? If Don loses by less than 100 votes, I'd be shocked if Moore voter fraud wasn't responsible.

The "racism" is a side issue. The real issue here is that handing out food to get votes is against the law. Saying that it's a "response" to Moore's doughnuts shows that Gordon, if he has lived in the ward 30 years as claimed, wasn't paying attention. The local Democratic Party (and Republican Party) always supplied election judges with lunches and/or snacks, long before Moore had any "in" with the party. That practice still exists in most city and suburban wards and townships, recognizing that election judges put in a 14 or 15-hour day, and often put up with a lot of nonsense, for very little pay. Moore doesn't hand out doughnuts to voters on election day or leading up to the election. Regardless of the illegality of Gordon's stunt, I have no use for a candidate who can't form a proper analogy.

Terrific. Base your choice for political office on the candidate who's got the most 'proper' promotional stunts. Take us all back to the hey-day of politics, when the dead could vote, and vote multiple times. That's the ticket!

Joe Moore and Alex Armour are both anti-Hispanic racists. They tried to disempower Latinos by trying to take out all Latinos elected at the County level in one election. Alex Armour made bets and diminished and made fun of Engineer Commissioner Frank Avila who is an honorable family man. Joe Moore acted like the phony hypocritical liberal he is and tried to replace the only Hispanic in the tax process. These anti Latino elements must be revealed.
