SEIU aims for a "machinelike" organization

Posted by Mick Dumke on Tue, Jan 23, 2007 at 11:12 AM

Later this week the Illinois State Council of the Service Employees International Union is likely to announce its endorsements for the February municipal elections. The list won’t be radically different from the one already announced by the Chicago Federation of Labor, an umbrella organization that includes several SEIU locals, but union leaders say it won’t be exactly the same, either. For example, in the hotly contested 43rd and 50th Ward races the federation backed Michele Smith and Greg Brewer, respectively. SEIU won’t be endorsing anyone.

Winning the endorsement of particular unions or locals is probably more important than winning the federation’s. For starters, it’s the individual unions who can provide the people needed to knock on doors, hand out literature, and get people to the polls, and not all of the 300-plus CFL member organizations are going to be equally motivated to, say, push Sandi Jackson over Darcel Beavers in the Seventh Ward—a race SEIU says is a priority. In addition, some union sources are quietly saying that the federation isn’t half as interested in committing the cash to back upstart aldermanic candidates as it’s been claiming the past few months.

Frankly, no one’s sure what the impact of the unions will be. The amount SEIU is going to spend on the municipal elections is “still up in the air,” according to Marianne McMullen, communications director for the SEIU state council. But she said 1,000 of the 78,000 SEIU members in Chicago have enlisted to work as “lock captains in key aldermanic races, including those in the 7th, 15th, 16th, and 42nd Wards

McMullen said SEIU has a clear goal. “There hasn’t been a strong model for any organization to mobilize voters besides the Democratic machine. SEIU is trying to set up a political organization that is machinelike in its structure,” she said.

A resident of the Daley family’s 11th Ward, McMullen said she’s used to visits from the Democratic assistant precinct captain, who asks how things are going and what services she needs. “Now, we can’t say we’ll move Streets and San for you," she said. "But the premise is the same—the communication-and-persuasion premise.”

SEIU and CFL are controlled by us! They will field candidate's in Wards we allow. Dennis Gannon, Tom Balanoff, Jerry Morrison are little bitch's for us. We will also make sure our Uncle Tom in the 21st ward Brookins beats Pro -Union candidate LEROY JONES! The Unions are done in Chicago and you can blame SEIU Balanoff/CFL Gannon!

I would like to thank SEIU for giving my Daughter-in-law Sandi Jackson $50,000.00. My son Jesse Jr really knew how to shake-down SEIU's Balanoff for the Cash-ola! To bad my son's act has been exposed, but Daddy's proud!

The unions use people money and thinks they can force people to work for their candidates. Well, way is the union money being put on Toni Foulkes in the 15th ward and the only thing she has done is worked at Jewels and was a part time speaker for ACORN not SEIU on the Big Box or is she the only one you can work like a puppet. You are a joke and your candidate is a joke. You should be ashame.

I ask that everyone truly interested in local politics, follow the money, that is right, visit elections.il.gov, select campaign finance disclosure and review each candidate's reported contributions. Be careful of teh candidate that shows large donations as Mrs Foulkes, who received $10,000 from just 1 contributor. Every intelligent person knows that he who gives that much, is surely expecting a 'return' on his invested dollars. Are the candidates with such large deposits from 1 contributor really looking to do their best for the 'community' or for those that try to purchase the election?

Mr Virgil Jones, as a man and candidate for teh 15th Ward, I am so disappointed that you chose to challenge not just my nomination papers but that of almost every other candidate as public record will show. I challenged no one because I believe the 'people' shall have the right to interview all candidates and form their own opinions as to who the 'best qualified' individual is to best represent the community at City Hall. Mr. Jones, I care not of your well documented imprisonement, nor of the 'taking bribes as alderman' charges you were convicted of by a USA court. No sir, I care about my community and the many social problems that plague us all. How dare you challenge me on stupid technicalities, like 'not having my nominations papers stapled together'. Please, by using rediculous laws you managed to removed me from the ballot and at the same time you managed to do what the old generations did to the 'black' community and that is to 'not give' an equitable opportunity to the entire Latino citizens of the 15th ward to have a choice in electing a competent, well educated and experienced leader. I am sorry that you have once more proven, that you are a man, not to be trusted.

Mrs Felicia Simmons-Stovall...you walk around teh mostly populated Latino side of the 15 Ward, claiming to be in 'our' side. When you and Mr Luis Silva, a supporter of your campaign, as Mr. Virgil Jones and Mrs. Foulkes using Mrs Hazel Haynes (same attorney), have denied the Latino community to have on the ballot a qualified and proven leader, me. I am glad you withdrew your objections, cause your attorney and Silva's attorney, Randy, realized your objections were unfounded and were just another attempt to remove me, a seriously qualified candidate from the ballot. DO NOT lied to the Latinos in the 15 Ward, no one should be trusted that tries their best to removed a candidate on the basis of 'residency'. I have lived in the 15 Ward since November 2 2002 and have invested in the 15 Ward since May 1990. DO NOT CLAIM TO BE A 'FRIEND' OF THE 15 WARD LATINOS, WHEN YOU ARE NOT. YOU JUST WANT THE VOTE, CAUSE WITHOUT THE LATINO NOTE, YOU OR ANY OTHER CANDIDATE, WILL NOT WIN.

it appears the unions are not taking their commitment to its members with all sincerity. Incumbent Lyle 6th ward is supported by CFL, ASFCME and on critical support votes for union members the incumbent is a no show does not even bother to vote. how can unions support this type of non commitment. i for one will vote for a people's candidate Eugene C. Davis the only real candidate with a honest vision for revitalizing our ward. Voters should check the records and be informed.

The voters of the 3rd ward will again elect Alderman Dorothy Tillman because they are happy with her and the progress she has brought to the ward. Long time residents appreciate the regenisis and the new residents are flocking to the area because she has created a new Mecca for Black Chicago. It seems like the unions really want Tillman off their backs because she critizes them for low Black participation in the unions. They will see come election day when their membership igornes their endoresments and relelect Tillman. I know several members, including neighbors who think its a joke. The volunteers walking around the neighborhood are from across the city and people don't know them. Some say that the head lady of ACORN the wife of the union guy.

I'm a 6th Ward resident and I cannot believe that anyone in their right mind would vote for Eugene C. Davis. He is completely unqualified, has a history of sexually harrassing his co-workers at various workplaces and has failed to articulate any vision whatsoever for the ward. Have you even looked at Karin Norington-Reaves? Or are you just some friend of Davis who is just loyal to him. Seriously, the man can't even speak well--how in the world is he going to represent us?

Black and Latino residents of the 15th ward, wake up!! The white unions and ACORN (Project Vote),Plantation Masters (Massas)want to control our ward. Isn't it interesting that Blacks and Hispanics are always the protesters? We walk the lines in the rain, heat, sleet, and snow, while the good old Massas make all the decisions and more importantly the salaries. They (massas) organize, we (slaves) do all the labor, and they (massas)give you the crumbs, and reap the benefits of the lion's share of the pie.How many minorities (slaves) sit at their tables when crucial decisions are made? Is it true that Black and Hispanic ACORN organizers make less than whites?Missy Talbott (massa) (ACORN) is well known for her before the meeting meetings. She meets with Black Foulkes (slaves) ..oops folks and tells them how to vote. Sounds like a Missy and house N relationship, doesn't it? Unfortunately, too many (slaves) will not challenge the slave massa relatonship, and therefore Missy T and other whites continue to have the key to our shackles. Another piece of Master-related insult is that while Missy Talbott, literally in bed with SEIU, and others promote a living wage, ACORN sued the state of California to get out of paying its own employees the state minimum wage. The Clinton Administration found that ACORN was misspending government grants designed to help the poor. It is rumored, in violation of the ACORN Organization's charter, Missy T is using office equipment, supplies and recruiting ACORN members (slaves) to support Toni Foulkes. Please ask the question, why is ACORN supporting "the Foulkes" now? The response has been, because she is a member. Malcolm X once said, you have been bambboozled, hoodwinked. Why didn't they elect her president of Iliinois ACORN years ago? Why becasue she is a baker, and has baked cakes at Jewel for almost two decades. She is probably a great baker; that is why ACORN members shared while they were on the lines, Toni did not get involved in a lot of actions that would benefit the struggling working families becasue she was promoting her side catering business. Google her and what do you find? Absolutely nothing started by her. Don't be bamboozled!!A candidate's history of community activism and accomplishments is what we should consider. Do your homework on the slave aka Toni Foulkes, and follow the money. We don't want a slave puppet elected to build our 15th ward whose strings are pulled by the white unions. Please let's not be fooled by the billboards, literature (that has no accomplishments or leadership skills)and the white campaign hipe. The fact is the slave candidate(Foulkes) with no leadership skills, or history of working for all people has been bought by ACORN and the unions for an Alderman's salary; $98,000.00 per year certainly beats the $35,000.00 she currently makes. We will have no voice in city council. It's a real challenge for them to even manfacture (lie) about her abilities and achievements. Consider the current situations of our working families, senior citizens, and the future. Break the slave shackles. The overwhelming majority of the unions are not inclusive at the top levels. Let's keep control of the 15th ward, have OUR, not outsiders) elected voice in the city council, and do what's best for our families.

Mr. Castillo provided a great lead. Definitely check out the website elections.il.gov and click on campaign finance disclosures. SEIU 880 PAC (massas) has contributed over $60,000.00 to THEIR campaign in the 15th ward. It's rather puzzling however, since the slave, aka Toni Foulkes, is a member of UFCW 881, why to date has her union's contribution totaled less than half (about $30,000.00) of SEIU's generous contribution. Some of the massas' expenses are tied to work for the slave, aka Toni Foukles, at SEIU's office at 209 W. Jackson. WOW! what a coincidence, ACORN is at the same address ... in the same office? ... NOOO?? Guess what? ... "it ain't" over ... more than likely the massas, aka SEIU and UFCW, will do what is necessary to buy the aldermanic seat. It's obvious, based on the flow of cashola, SEIU and ACORN have a big stake in winning. With this flow of cashola, and with more to come, did any minority businesses reap any benefits. Not the obvious e.g. Black Hispanic radio stations, Black Hispanic print, and promises. Were Black or Hispanic printers used? How many minority consultants were used? What knowledge does the slave have about Hispanic issues, because the people who count, the voters, have not seen her. Maybe because the slave will be unable to answer hard questions?? Citizens of the 15th ward, don't allow cultural differences to blind you to the plantation masters, who are outsiders, and want to control our communities. We all share the same concerns, employment opportunities, affordable housing, community economic development, quality education for our children, affordable healthcare for families and senior citizens and safety concerns.Fight back and show the outsiders (massas) that we are no longer slaves and are capable of identifying our issues and protecting our voice in city hall.

Sorry Mr. Smith that your 8 years of loyalty to the Union just didn't matter. Don't forget history. African Americans and Native Americans fought with the "Union" Army during the Civil War to insure their freedom, equality, and a dream of security for the future of their families. When the war was over, was anything really different for either African Americans or Native Americans? Treaties with Native Americans were made and broken. How many African Americans received the 40 acres and a mule? Some made a "living wage." When given land and the right to control their futures, towns like Rosewood in Florida developed, but later was burned by outsiders because African Americans demonstrated the ability to be independent and create a thriving economy. When were African Americans allowed to vote? African American Pullman Porters organized their union. When did the "colored" signs come down? Are they actually down? I know you understand that the "Unions'" interests for power, greed and control are paramount to your interest to respond to the needs of the Black and Brown people in your ward.

I live in the 3rd ward and I disagree with Chicago Smart Girl. The residents who live around 47th and King Drive love Dorthoy Tillman, but not many more do. We invited her 10 times to our board of director meetings and she did not show up once. In addition, we had an issue with the CTA and called, I'm not kidding, 36 times. We talked to her once and she commited to come check out our problem, she never showed. When we finally met her face to face she said she had "talked to us," talk is cheap, she didn't help at all. All she had to do was listen and I would have campaigned for her. Lastly, Alderman Tillman is not suited for her job. I, and many others, support her efforts for civil rights, but they do not belong in the context of an Alderman. People need someone to represent the local issues folks have, such as jobs, affordable housing and safety. Alderman Tillman is more concerned with slavery reparations. What really did it for our family was reading at a rally in Miami Alderman Tillman said "the real holocust was slavery." Why would she make that type of comment? What do the Jews have to do with slavery?? Time for a change in the 3rd ward, folks need someone who will listen to all the constituents. I'm backing Mell Monroe.

I agree with Eric the current 3rd ward alderman is inaccessible.Development in the 3rd ward is happening in spite of her and it is haphazard. I had not decided who I would support until just recently, because I wanted to make an informed decision based on all the information about the candidates. In my opinion, Pat Dowell's work in urban planning is the kind of expertise the ward needs and would benefit from. She has my vote.

It’s good to know that Greg Brewer is for…Greg Brewer. At the recent candidate debate at Boone School when the panelists were asked whether or not they would support the run-off candidate if they themselves didn’t make it - Greg Brewer followed Dolar and Aftab’s “yes” answers with a vague comment of “I hope my campaign efforts would have helped…” or something like that - basically saying no. Good to know that Greg Brewer is so concerned about our community and the problems facing the 50th Ward under Ald. Stone’s administration that he will pack up and take his bat and ball and go home if he doesn’t make the final cut - thanks Greg - small wonder the Chicago Tribune endorsed Naisy Dolar!

Mr. Castillo, you should focus more on your campaign and trying to get people to support you, other than bashing eveyone. I am a hispanic in the 15th and I have never seen or heard from you. You may talk about Stovall, but I have seen her more than once. So, be sure to know that you dont have my vote. As for the union, I agree with all the people that feel as if the union is trying to use us by giving the canidates all that money and once they win, the union will try to come in and take over our community. I have yet to see Toni Flukes at a forum, all I see is big bill boards with her face, and thats all I am aware of. We have the choice to stand up and fight for the correct canidates or we can sit back, think that our vote doesnt count and do nothing. Get out and vote! It matters. Stovall for the 15th, she number one on the ballot, you cant miss it. Check her out at www.stovall2007.com

Okay Jerimah and Eric...only one week to go and Tillman will be re-elected. You can't deny how the 3rd ward is one of the most sought after wards in the city. Tillman has lanned the ward and it has the most TIF district than any other so that the money stays in the neighborhoods. Seems like people are taking little personal beefs and jealousies to discredit Tillman. Her reparations bill is being passed all acrossed the country and the discussion is taking place everywhere from the Church of England to Jamiaca. Mel doesn't have a chance. and Pat doesn't have the peoples support. The unions don't live in 3 and Tillman will come out with over 60 percent. Jerimah and Eric you are in the minority.

==PROPOSAL FOR AN ELECTION EXPERIMENT== This may not be the proper forum for this, but I will state my 'idea'/'proposal' anyway, and see if anyone is intrigued by my reasoning. I hold the opinion that it has been a very, very long time since we, the citizens of these United States, have truly and honestly been represented by our so-called 'public servants'. While it can be said that a certain small percentage of any given area's population is well and generously served by their elected officials,(at the financial and social expense of the area's 'common', politically unconnected citizens),for the most part, our elected officials are motivated by three basic principles: get power, keep power and use that power to gain wealth, for themselves and for those of like mind. I assert that the vast majority of voters are poorly served by the 'powers that be', in all areas of their daily lives. It is obvious that many 'public servants' define themselves as being those individuals who are served BY the public. This sad state of affairs is the result of simple mathematics. If one determines, in any given area,(ie. city, county, state and federal),the total number of citizens who are qualified to cast a vote, one finds that perhaps 50%, more or less, of that number are actually registered to vote; further,in any given election, one finds that typically between 50% - 60% of those registered don't even bother to make the effort to actually cast their vote(s). Thus, all that is required to win a 2 person race is 51% of the votes actually cast, effectively meaning that a mere 26% of the total number of citizens qualified to vote are determining who is elected. In a race of more than 2 contestants, the percentage needed to win becomes even lower than 26%. It is a puzzling mystery why the 2 major political parties, the Dumbocrats and the Retardicans, continue to strongly resist the establishment of additional political parties, though one sees occasional use of 'shill' candidates by both major parties. So, I propose a little experiment, to be conducted in both the smallest, local level elections, (ie. town, city, county, township, village, etc.), as well as in the larger level elections, (ie. state and federal), an experiment which is designed to accomplish several goals and answer several questions,(besides the obvious one, of seeing if enough people/voters will get off their butts and choose to participate in this experiment!). Basically, my question is this: what would happen if enough voters choose, in every election, both primary and general, to cast their votes by adhering to the following rules, completely disregarding all factors commonly used by voters to make their decisions on who to vote for, and simply casting their vote(s) by applying these rules/formula: * 1) Determine which candidates are the INCUMBENTS and DO NOT vote for any of them. * 2) If there are only two candidates running for any given office, all that the voter MUST know is which one is the INCUMBENT, then vote for the CHALLENGER candidate. * 3) If there are MORE than two candidates vying for a given office, determine if the incumbent is listed FIRST, and IF THIS IS SO, then vote for the challenger candidate who is listed LAST. * 4) If the incumbent is NOT listed FIRST, then vote for the challenger candidate who IS listed FIRST. * 5) If no incumbent is running for office, always vote for the LAST candidate listed. Remember to COMPLETELY DISREGARD all impulses to concern yourself with the specific persons who you are voting for and/or the specific persons you are not voting for and/or the specific incumbents who will, should enough voters in any given election participate in this experiment, be losing their jobs. Remember, also, that the issues don't matter, policies don't matter, individual candidates' personal charm/attractiveness does not matter..................... nothing matters other than adhering to the 5 rules stated above. If enough voters in any given election participate in this experiment, the result should be that a whole lot of incumbents will be voted out of office. What reaction(s), on the part of politicians and their cronies, will this stimulate? If enough voters CONTINUE to participate in this experiment during the next several election cycles, thus keeping any specific person from holding office for more than a single term, will those non-politically connected individuals who would like to sincerely serve their fellow citizens by holding public office, but have determined that their chances of being elected are slim-to-none, now find that they have a reasonably decent chance of succeeding in holding public office? Will the 'professional politicians' eventually find other lines of work and abandon trying to gain and hold power over their fellow citizens, (since it's difficult to establish power, influence and control in just a single term in office)? Will the majority of those citizens who do gain public office now be honest, ethical, hard-working and intelligent individuals, who seek office to actually serve the electorate, (since the traditional motivations of power, influence and wealth will effectively no longer be available)? Will these new, honest candidates, now encouraged to run for office, alter the usual dynamics of 'campaigning'? And in what ways? As the reader may surmise, this experiment is designed to disrupt the decades-old flow of bullshit, which has passed for so long as democracy; bullshit both by the politicians and bullshit by the voting public's failure to effectively participate in their own governing. The above experiment should be conducted in all political contests; Administrative, Executive, Legislative and Judicial. The rule to remember is: WHEN IN DOUBT, VOTE THEM OUT. The 5 rules above are designed to mathematically ensure that the maximum number of votes are cast in such a way as to be effective in denying all elected officials more than one term in office; to prove, by the only means those smugly in power ever understand, that the voters actually determine who holds public office, and that those presently holding said office(s) have, for way too long, held the vast majority of their constituents in contempt, evidenced not by their words, but by their deeds. Keep in mind that this experiment I am proposing is not meant to be a solution to our present social, economic and political disparities, but more as a catalyst for positive change in the attitudes of those who claim to represent ALL citizens' best interests, instead of the present predominance of their representing only the interests of the chosen few. To paraphrase one of our past presidents, who once said: * You may fool SOME of the people ALL of the time * You may fool ALL of the people SOME of the time * But you cannot fool ALL of the people, ALL of the time The sad reality is that you need only to fool just the right number of people, at just the right time, to attain power and control over the many.
