12 O'Clock Track: Magik Markers return with the primitive "Bonfire"

It's been four years since the duo of Elisa Ambrogio and Pete Nolan (aka Magik Markers) released Balf Quarry, a sometimes punk and abrasive, sometimes haunting and pristine album that proved a departure from their noisier and less song-structured debut full-length, Boss. Finally (finally) the longtime musical partners are beginning to tease a new album (add in new bass player John Shaw, too). Surrender to the Fantasy is due out November 19 via Drag City, and the first single from the album, "Bonfire," is today's 12 O'Clock Track. The track isn't too much a tip of the hand as to what side of the fence the album will sit. It's fierce and primitive—the first 35 seconds are built around the simple, flat chant of "Bonfire"—with Ambrogio's slightly distorted vocals almost muddled beneath the electro-inflected drums and accompanying clatter. Short, stripped-down, and unflinchingly in-your-face. But I'd be surprised if Magik Markers doesn't continue the trend from Balf Quarry of utilizing Ambrogio's surprisingly pretty, melody-driven voice during the more somber and eerie tracks. At least, I hope they do.
