We always make a special effort to cover the European Union Film Festival, because it invariably turns out to be one of the year's best moviegoing experiences (even if it's more like an epic series than an actual festival). This year Film Center presents 61 features from member countries, and we've got new reviews of six entries; check back on March 7, 14, and 21 for more installments. Also in this week's issue we recommend Like Someone in Love, the latest from Abbas Kiarostami; Pavilion, a new indie feature from Tim Sutton; and Stoker, the U.S. debut of South Korean creeper Chan-wook Park.

But that wasn't enough for us, so we also reviewed: Bless Me, Ultima, an adaptation of the 1972 novel by Rudolfo Anaya; Jack the Giant Slayer, a fairy-tale blockbuster by Bryan Singer (X-Men); Phantom, with Ed Harris as a Soviet submarine commander trying to regain control of his vessel from rogue KGB agents; A Place at the Table, a documentary look at hunger in America; and Snitch, a crime thriller with Dwayne Johnson.

Best bets for repertory: Zhang Yimou's Hero (2002), Wednesday at University of Chicago Doc Films; Don Siegel's Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), Friday through Sunday at the Logan; Alain Resnais' Last Year at Marienbad (1961), Saturday and Sunday at Doc; and Buster Keaton's Steamboat Bill, Jr. (1928), Sunday at Doc.

Special events this week include the Chicago Irish Film Festival, moving to River East 21 and Society for Arts this year, and the opening-night program of the Chicago Underground Film Festival, which continues through March 10 (check out next week's issue for our critical coverage).
