Joseph Epstein on John R. Tunis

Earlier this week I posted a paean to All-American, a 1942 novel by John R. Tunis about a high school football player's encounters with anti-Semitism, racism, and class arrogance in his hometown. It was the most important novel I read growing up, and I was inspired to write my piece by a Mary Schmich column that said it played the same role in the life of the essayist Joseph Epstein.

Through a mutual friend, I've learned that in 1987 Epstein wrote at length about Tunis in Commentary. Commentary has generously lowered the pay wall around Epstein's essay, and anyone who'd like to read what Epstein had to say about this wonderful writer can do so here. Please do.
