EDM producers started latching onto trap music in earnest earlier this year, and while there have been some legitimately fantastic tracks to come out of the stylistic collision—see Flosstradamus's unexpected outburst of new material—a bunch of two-bit beat makers who just discovered how to program 16th-note triplets are already sapping the last of its edginess. In this kind of situation, you can choose to get a prime spot among the people queuing up to be totally over it, or you can try to squeeze as much enjoyment as possible out of the trend before it goes to Rush Street to die.
Trap Bubbling, the new mixtape from Dutch DJ and producer Munchi—best known as one of the biggest names in the moombahton scene—makes a convincing argument for taking the latter route with trap EDM. Hosted by southern mixtape gurus the Trap-a-Holics and clocking in at a satisfyingly brief 14 and a half minutes, Trap Bubbling gives rave-ready makeovers to several years of radio and club hits, including Big Sean's "A$$ (Dance)" and Waka Flocka Flame's "Hard in the Paint"; the results fit in nicely with hip-hop's current fascination with MDMA.
