White Sox fans take lead in stupidity

Cubs fans: We win for being more loyal, not more stupider.
In this weekend's experiment to see who has the stupider fans, the White Sox or the Cubs, the Sox have opened a commanding lead.

Although, of course, the findings are open to debate.

On Friday, the fifth-place Cubs somehow drew 31,255 fans to Wrigley Field. Right now, there is no question who has the more loyal fans, and at least the Cubs rewarded that loyalty with a victory over the Colorado Rockies.

The question, of course, is whether that loyalty also involves some stupidity.

By contrast, the first-place Sox could lure only 25,058 to White Sox Park on a beautiful Friday night. They also played an exciting, if aggravating game, blowing a five-run lead in the ninth inning to deprive Jake Peavy of the win, but coming back to score two in the bottom half to claim the victory that put them two and a half games up on the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central.

There were ameliorating circumstances, in that the Sox were competing against a Bears exhibition game. But that's an exhibition game, after all.

Clearly Sox fans are stupider not to support their team than Cubs fans are to support their team.

Then the Cubs drew 35,296 Saturday afternoon in a loss to the Rockies to all but seal the deal. The Sox will have to hope for a full house for the fireworks game Saturday night, then more than hold their own on Sunday in order to avoid being outdrawn by the Cubs on an August weekend.

So put up or shut up, Sox fans—or maybe just shut up.
