I'm a sucker for nearly everything San Diego musician Rob Crow has ever recorded—and that means more than just his sort-of established groups, such as jokey metal act Goblin Cock and schizoid experimental-pop project Ladies (with powerhouse drummer Zach Hill). I'm talking about downloading B sides by Optiganally Yours, a duo built around a toy organ called the Optigan; I'm talking about spinning a shoddily recorded live solo cover of the Misfits' "Astro Zombies" on repeat for weeks; I'm talking about dropping good money on a merely adequate covers EP at a live show because I already owned every other album at the merch booth.

I may have a problem. But Crow's next release is something you don't need an unhealthy obsession in order to be interested in hearing: Information Retrieved, a full-length by Pinback. Today's 12 O'Clock Track is "Proceed to Memory," the new single from that album.

Pinback sounded a little like they were on cruise control on their previous album, 2007's Autumn of the Seraphs, but if "Proceed to Memory" is any indication the group has gotten out of that rut on Information Retrieved. Mixing a light and sprightly rhythm and a slightly downcast melody, the song gradually adds instrumental layers and vocal splashes—all in all, it's uplifting, with a healthy kick. You can stream it below; Information Retrieved comes out in October.
