Few living musicians carry on the classic sound of jazz guitar better than Bobby Broom, a New York native who first worked with Sonny Rollins as a teenager in 1977 and took up residence in the Chicago area in 1984. He had an ill-advised dalliance with slick fusion in the 80s, but for most of his career he's been a paragon of postbop fundamentals, applying his warm, clean tone to solos that are equally soulful, melodic, and sleek.

Broom has put in two extended stints with Rollins, one in the 80s and one in the 00s, and over the years he's also worked with Art Blakey, Dr. John, Kenny Burrell, Charles Earland, and Stanley Turrentine, among others. He's a founding member of the excellent Deep Blue Organ Trio, which also includes B-3 master Chris Foreman and drummer Greg Rockingham and has played the Green Mill nearly every Tuesday since 2003. And for an even longer stretch, Broom led his own trio in a weekly gig at Pete Miller's Steakhouse in Evanston. All things considered, it's surprising that he's never headlined Chicago's most celebrated mainstream jazz venue, the Jazz Showcase, but that's about to change: his trio with bassist Dennis Carroll and drummer Makaya McCraven takes the stage there Thursday through Sunday.

In May I wrote about Broom's latest album, Upper West Side Story (Origin), his first to feature his original compositions exclusively; it's one of his best. Many of the tunes have been staples of his performances for years, and he's sure to bust out some of them this week. Below you can check out the album's opener, "D's Blues."
