- Ryan Dempster was a road warrior for the Cubs Tuesday to get them both off the skids.
Eventually, anyway.
Ryan Dempster pitched the Cubs to a 10-0 victory Tuesday in Milwaukee. It was his first win since last August, a streak comprising 18 winless starts and nine defeats.
It only seemed that long since the Cubs had won away from the Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field, but the victory also ended an 11-game road skid that fell just one short of the team record set back in 1954.
After almost expiring for lack of support going back to last season, Dempster got a ten-run cushion, a lead not even Carlos Marmol could blow—not that manager Dale Sveum dared call on him for mop-up duty.
Unfortunately, the Cubs are going to need more than the law of averages to build a winning streak on the road Wednesday in Milwaukee. The Brewers have Zack Greinke on the mound, and he's been a monster at home, unbeaten at 3-0 with a 1.30 earned run average, compared to 3-2 with a 5.93 ERA on the road.
The Cubs and starter Paul Maholm will have to earn this one.
