12 O'Clock Track / Music 12 O'Clock Track: Spacin', "Empty Mind"

There's something magical about walking into a record store, hearing something new on the shop stereo, and walking out with a copy of the wax. Call me old-fashioned, but that's part of what makes the record-shopping experience so personal and great—a Mediafire page may get you what you want for free, but it won't shake your hand or learn your tastes and point you toward more amazing music it knows you'll love. When I dropped by Permanent Records this weekend to grab the freshly reissued Solid Space LP (a mysterious band I picked for a 12 O'Clock Track months ago), I heard shop manager Dave McCune spinning the new Deep Thuds LP by Spacin'. I knew right away I had to have it.
Spacin' hails from the City of Brotherly Love and specializes in all things psychedelic. The record jumps around a little bit: some songs are stoney rock 'n' roll, some rely on spacey shimmer a la Hawkwind, and others are experimental and repetitive like Chrome. Today's 12 O'Clock Track is "Empty Mind", the kick-off track to Deep Thuds. It's a Stooges-inspired slice of psychedelic swagger and stomp. The song sounds exactly how the front cover of this record looks.
