Marisa Monte will turn 45 this summer, and she's nearly alone among singers her age in that she's not merely a nostalgia act—the durability, adventurousness, and sophistication of her music make her one of Brazil's greatest artists of the past two decades. Last week Blue Note released O Que Você Quer Saber de Verdade, her first new album in six years (she released two excellent albums simultaneously in 2006) and her eighth overall, ninth if you count her collaboration with Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Antunes, Tribalistas. It's a mellow affair that steeps her elegant samba and bossa nova tunes in rich, multilayered arrangements. The album was produced by Monte and Dadi (aka Dadi Carvalho, formerly of the great Novos Baianos and a solo artist in his own right), with sessions in Rio de Janeiro, New York, São Paulo, and LA. Her impressive supporting cast included Brazilian heavy hitters—Vinicius Cantuaria, Domenico Lancellotti, Rodrigo Amarante (Los Hermanos, Little Joy), and members of Nação Zumbi—along with Americans such as reedist Marty Ehrlich, cellist Erik Friedlander, keyboardist Bernie Worrell, and bassist Greg Cohen. After the jump you can check out the video for the moody single "Ainda Bem."
