Music / Post No Bills Listen: American Mavericks playlists

The San Francisco Symphony plays three New York concerts at the end of the month, and over the next few weeks Alarm Will Sound, Jennifer Koh, Jack Quartet, So Percussion, and other acts perform around the city. Anthology Film Archives presents screenings of films about composers including John Cage, Lou Harrison, and Conlon Nancarrow, and the Kitchen offers concerts by artists who blur genre lines, among them William Basinski, Tristan Perich, and Mary Halvorson. New York classical station WQXR has been cheerleading for American Mavericks, and among its coolest endeavors is a series of "Maverick Playlists" assembled by artists currently at work on the fringes of pop, classical, and experimental music: Padma Newsome (Clogs), So Percussion, David Byrne, Dave Douglas, and more. My personal fave thus far is the playlist provided by former Battles member Tyondai Braxton, who includes works by Nancarrow, Harrison, Glenn Branca, George Antheil, Morton Subotnick, and his brilliant dad, Anthony Braxton. At the station's website you can listen to all of the playlists, but for convenience's sake I've added Braxton's below.
